New gaming monitor king?
I've been stuck with my Dell U2410 monitor for a long time, been wanting a larger monitor with a higher resolution and a higher refresh rate, but don't want to compromise on the quality of an IPS panel. Looks like there's finally one that brings it all.. higher resolution, IPS panel, fast pixel response times, G-Sync, 144Hz refresh rate, minimal input lag.. seems too good to be true, but the tests show it to be what it claims to be!

About the only down sides are 16:9 instead of 16:10, and it isn't really high resolution retina type display. In a perfect world it would be double the 2560x1440 and be a 5120x2880 monitor, great for normal work, then in gaming be 2560x1440.
Still will definitely take a long hard look at this monitor.

PLanning on getting one of these as a birthday present to myself this summer. Glad to know it's meeting expectations.
I'm guessing it will end up being ~$1000 CDN though.

Yeah I can't stand TN monitors unfortunately (for the VG248QE I mean)

I hope it's OK if I ask a related question - I'm considering a 2560x1440 monitor. Can I get that resolution via any of the connections (Display Port, HDMI, DVI?) My PC doesn't have a Display Port connection, but it does have both HDMI 1.4 and DVI. I might want to keep my HDMI connection available on the monitor if possible, but that would only be if I can get 2560x1440 over DVI.

A dual link DVI should handle that resolution, but not all video cards have a dual link DVI port. Even HDMI sometimes they're limited to 1920x1080 on the port or on the monitor. Have to check the specific models.

I checked my HDMI port and it supports 1.4, which should support my desired resolution. Doesn't look like my motherboard and processor will support dual link DVI though. Thanks for the info.

Yeah HDMI 1.4 spec can, but sometimes monitors themselves won't display more than a certain resolution over HDMI.. not sure if I've ever seen a case where the video card limits the HDMI resolution but it wouldn't surprise me.

Just recently (june 2014) Nvidia enabled cards with HDMI 1.4 to display 4K. The trouble is it doesn't do the standard YCbCR 4:4:4 and only uses 4:2:0 which is fine for movies but not for using as an computer monitor. This effects people who want to use a small (40") TV as a monitor and has caused a lot of angst with Samsung who claim to do the full standard but according to tests often don't, when using the latest Nvidia 900 series cards which have the HDMI 2.0 outlets.

Anyways have you considered using a 4K TV as your monitor and if you or others do, do the research before hand. The new JU7100 seems to be 444 chroma for now. Last year Samsung changed their chipsets mid season so that the newer ones didn't work full chroma but they are a great TV.

Yeah despite G-Sync being touted as an option to help out lower-end cards, this upcoming gamut of 144hz 4K 27" monitors that are in the $1000+ price range are definitely directed at high-end users. 6xx/7xx/9xx series cards should have DisplayPort support out of the box.

Maybe some of you tech guys can help me, I'm looking at an ASUS ROG SWIFT PQ278Q to finally upgrade my monitor. Is it worth me grabbing one of these things or for the price should i wait a tad longer for something better? I'm not super knowledgable on the tech side of things I just want to take advantage of my 980's for a number of years

The monitor posted here (XB270HU) has pretty much relegated the PG278Q to second best when it comes to G-Sync monitors.
They share similar specs, however the PG278Q has worse color/ghosting/sharpness (TN panel vs IPS).
EDIT: Wrong specs, fixed.
That said, we don't know how much the XB270HU will be in Canada, it will probably be $1,000+, while the PG278Q is $950 at MemEx.

So I got the new monitor, but my integrated graphics only supports 1920x1080 over digital (DVI or HDMI, no Display Port.) So I'm just going to throw something like a 750 TI in there.

With VR getting big in the next couple of years, I've decided that buying monitors for gaming isn't really required anymore, nor are fancy multi-monitor setups like Eyefinity, Nvidia surround, etc. or the videocards needed to drive all those pixels.

You'll need even more powerful video cards to drive VR headsets, the screen resolutions are going to be fairly high (1920x1080 level, or higher according to some rumours), and driving two of those at a minimum frame rate of 80 or 95fps that they're talking about would require some pretty beefy hardware.

I know Oculus is recommending SLI/Crossfire sets to run the headset best, as it's firmware/drivers will allocate 1 card for each display.

Depends how much of a stickler you are for certain things, and what you will use it for.
You can get a 1080p TN panel @ 24" for ~$120.
You can get a 1080p IPS panel @ 24" for ~$250.
You can get a 1080p TN panel @ 27" for ~$250.
You can get a 1080p IPS panel @ 27" for ~$400.
Past that you, are getting into 1440p/1600p territory, and bonus stuff like G-Sync and designer-quality color panels.
