Doug Gilmour explains why he rejected Maple Leafs deal to Canucks
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/b...trade-canucks/
Quote:
In hindsight, my request probably cost the Leafs the best deal they could have made for me. Cliff told me which teams were interested, and the first one was Vancouver. The Canucks’ general manager, Pat Quinn—Cliff ’s old friend—was considering sending young prospect Markus Naslund to Toronto for me
|
This is what happens when you give too much power to your players.
Thomas Kaberle doesn't waive his NMC when the Flyers offered Jeff Carter and a first round draft pick.
Not sure what Leafs could have gotten for Mats Sundin in 2008 but it would be at least a 1st round draft pick as well. Probably a decent prospect too.

as to why he rejected the deal to Vancouver
Quote:
I told Cliff I didn’t want to go to Vancouver. It wasn’t because of the team, but because of the distance from southern Ontario and the long flights. It was just too far from away where I needed to be in my life.

Good cover for the real reason being he didn't want to spend the rest of his days with that loser stench all over him. He says he wanted to go to a team with a chance at a SC, that is never the Canucks.

If a player has a NMC/NTC i don't hold anything against him or the team in these situations. When you see teams "being respectful" like this or when the Flames were doing this with Iginla, it really annoys me.

Um, didn't Iginla have a NMC/NTC? I'm pretty sure he did.

Yeah, I'm sure Iggy did. But Kipper didn't. Leafs wanted Kipper in 2013. I think we could've gotten a 2nd rounder for Kipper. 3rd rounder for sure.

Scoring Winger
|
As a side note, is there a worse trade in league history than the penguins made for Marcus Naslund? Penguins GM should have been shot into the sun for that one!
Naslund fresh off a 52 point season in 66 games for Alex Stojanov who put up a whopping one assist in 58 games straight up. Naslund would go on to score 756 points for the canucks while the mighty Stojanov played 45 games for the pens registering 6 points

That trade was conditional on Kipper playing another year. He didn't want to, can't fault him for that.

Can’t fault Kipper for anything, ever!
Killer should have just told the truth and admitted his intense hatred of the Canucks. It’s only one NHL head coaching job out of 31. Burn that bridge Killer!
Signing your player to a NMC is basically a ‘screw you’ to the GM that will replace you.
