I don’t hate. I just think it’s kinda dumb.

Well, the word “Kraken” is certainly not copyrighted. I am sure if they were determined to use one of the movie clips they would be able to quite easily.

Kraken is a great name! Great Rum too! Plus tentacles on EVERYTHING, and all sorts of pirate tie ins. What’s not to like?!

Going to be awesome!
Calgary, like most cities, has had a "great fire" in their history.

It always bothers me when a sports team does not end in an "S". For example the Lightning, Wild, Thunder, Jazz, Avalanche. Something just seems off. On the bright side, they may come up with a very nice and unique jersey...

In the final championship game the opposing pitcher balked three times in one inning. So epic. You can't write that stuff.

Keep in mind, when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg there was word the team name had been chosen (I think it was Manitoba Jets, or Manitoba Polar Bears if my memory serves me correctly). To fans delight, it was later revealed to be the Winnipeg Jets which happens to be the right name according to most.

Yeah rumour has it people high up in the organization wanted a completely different name for the team when they moved to Winnipeg. But they eventually capitulated to public pressure to call them the Winnipeg Jets. Which of course was the right move. Now just fix the uniforms and it's perfect

Which kind of shows names don’t have to be edgy or cool. Timeless is always a good option.

Yeah, I have been pretty partial to that design too (same Sparky guy I posted about earlier)

He has TONS of variations of it, but this one is a pretty good look

Spoiler!

The Raptors have had excellent brand recognition in the last decade or so. This wasn't a last year thing. It just had the huge windfall that any brand that won it all would have.

Another topic, but as a quick aside - the Raptors brand took a back seat for a bit recently as they pushed 'We the North' and they were doing so to try and bring some life back to the brand. A lot of what they were trying to do was give it a maturity I believe

The Raptors as the Raptors is a pretty new resurgence IMO

I'm confused. Was "We the North" meant to replace "The Raptors" for awhile? That doesn't make sense to me. The we the north thing was very successful, but I never saw it reported as replacing a lame team name, and the team name always seemed to be present.

During all the success of that slogan, the team was always referred to as the Raptors and it was Raptors jerseys selling really well during that time as well. Everyone I knew referred to them as the Raptors and loved the name, brand and jerseys.

I had never once heard that the team name and the slogan were mutually exclusive and they decided to abandon the team name in favour of the slogan. And again, it's my understanding that the team and brand (Raptors) were very popular during the Demar DeRozan years.

Yeah, I thought you were talking about brand recognition in the last decade

They ran the WeTheNorth stuff in 2013, and ran with a logo that only represented a Raptor in the ripped ball. They ran that early for the playoffs (unexpectedly if I remember correctly) and have been pushing that since. That marked the entire brand you'd be referring to I think?

So total aside, but in talking about how cool Kraken is unfortunately I aways saw this North stuff as a marketing team disagreeing about how cool a frikken' Raptor is

Edit: Sorry I didn't even answer the question. No, I don't think it was meant to replace it. It just represented the brand more than the Raptor imagery

Fitting. Named the Raptors when Jurassic Park was still iconic, and then rebranding with We the North during Game of Thrones' run. Consistent franchise.
