There are no guarantees in hockey, period, but Raanta has been the better goalie for the last 3 seasons and is 3 years younger.

Raanta - 28 (just turned 28 days ago)
14/15 - .936
15/16 - .919
16/17 - .922

Johnson - 31 (turns 31 in less than a month)
14/15 - .889
15/16 - .920
16/17 - .910

Those stats aren't really that similar, and Raanta is at an age where a lot of goalies take the next step into a starter's role. Johnson at this point probably is what he is, a good backup.

It's insane to me that 24 people want Mike Smith.

Looking at the poll list I feel better off naming goalies I don't want. Condon,Grubaur, Pickard and to a lesser extent Bernier. I guess I'd be okay if Johnson was brought back as a number two, but I'm a huge Gillies believer so I want that spot to be his. At this point, Fleur is the best of the bunch bit I suppose what we get is going to depend on cost of acquisition. I'm fully prepared for a Smith or Lehtonen or Halak trade if things fall that way. I don't think the 1st round pick is on the table. Seeing as the Flames Won't pick until round 4 if it was dealt.

I mean unless you land Matt Murray or Price with it. Then obviously the reasoning is sound.

That's less shocking to me than the 4 people who want a 33 year old Cam Ward, who hasn't seen a SV% north of .910 in 6 seasons.

What a disaster that choice would be.

I was going to post this same thought. Must have some family members on the board or something.

One season in a 12 year career where he posted a sv% above 0.916. Just abysmal. It's like saying I want the 2016/17 version of Brian Elliot as the BEST case scenario.

I think Ward or Smith would be the type of Hail Mary moves that may get the head coach fired. Not sure if Treliving would want to put his coach in that situation.

Can't believe some posters are wanting Ward, Smith , Mason or Halak? I know Elliot stunk the place up durring playoffs but i rather him back than any of the 4 mentioned above. IMO if anybody is going to have a bounce back year out of them it would be Elliot.

That said I rather a true #1 but i only see Fleury as a potential replacement. If the rumors are ture about Bishop then ownership really dropped the ball. Especially the trade deadline rumour. Can't blame Bishop for choosing Dallas after what he "might" have experienced the last year dealing with the flames.

If we get Smith, the next 2 seasons will be write-offs. Feel free to bookmark this post.

Haynes with a piece suggesting some goalie tandems to add to the discussion.

(Not pairings that are likely necessarily, but pairings that may work)

Murray-Bernier
Schneider-Johnson
Elliott-Raanta
Fleury-Grubauer
Smith-Saros
Mrazek-Halak
It would be interesting to see the results from acquiring not just one from the list, but two.

The more I think about it the more I think teams will not trade unprotected players. Every one has to lose someone. So I think the guys like Raanta/Grubauer will be no less likely to move than any other year. Teams will likely get a better deal from Vegas to not take their guy and get to keep him than selling to another team and having to lose the next guy.

If we don't get Marc Andre Fleury I consider our goalie situation a failure. Please get Fleury, if he will even come here. We should have got Fleury last summer instead of Elliott ugghhh

If we could get Schneider that would be amazing. I wonder what package would get a deal done?:

Gillies + 16th overall + Alex Chiasson

Would that be enough? Do we want to trade our only top 100 pick in this years draft?

This allows Parsons to develop in the AHL for a few years while we go for it with Schneider.

Fleury will struggle here just like Elliott did.

Hahahahaha, Which of Ovechkin, Benn or Marchand would you take out to put Hall in the top 2 or 3?

Is Hall even a top 10 LW anymore? I'd have a tough time fitting him in there.

I don't know about that.

Being unable to make NHL goalie caliber saves every odd game I don't think is a symptom of the team the goalie is playing behind.

There was a good enough top 6 d group in the second half for a competent goalie to succeed, I think.

They were allowing less shots against per game than last season. 8th least in the league, in fact! There is no reason that the goaltending should've been just marginally better than in 15-16.

I think we just keep picking up guys that don't have the best mental fortitude to rebound from tough games, and with existing holes in their games that other teams could consistently expose. I also think the goalie coach has done very little to remedy the issues, or help work them out with these goalies over the course of their tenure.

Something needs to change there. New coach, and a different direction with the goalies. Maybe young and not fully proven, but with potential upside is the way to go this time. With vet guys, if they falter then you know they'll likely just keep doing it. They don't have the room to grow.
