Flames 1st Quarter Report Cards - Darren Haynes

Just posted at The Athletic
Report Cards for all 23 Flames. Of note:
"A"s went to Tkachuk, Mangiapanne, Lindholm and Rittich.
Gaudreau gets a "D". He's grouped in with the likes of Bennett, Brodie and Lucic.
Stone, Frolik and Jankowski get "F"s.

Some students have an off year. Others are just dumb.

Gaudreau I would expect to bounce back. Bennett might need summer school or to be held back a grade.

Default Darren Haynes' Q1 Report Cards

I can’t wait until Bennett is taking all his stupid penalties and putting up goose eggs for some other team

I mean, it would be great if we could put him in storage and dust him off for the playoffs I suppose but its the 82 games needed to get there that matter just as much and quite frankly he isn't helping.

When Czarnik is healthy put them on the 4L with Jankowski as I think thats the only line Bennett has steadily been positive on.

First response criticizes Bennett and the rest of the sheep follow.

He actually won me over last year as he seemed like he was starting to get it and evolve. This year, he's been worse than ever and his dumb penalties seem to be at their worst level yet. How a top pick can have such a poor hockey IQ and complete lack of hands is just beyond me.

The bottom line here is that the forward ranks need far more from everyone not named Lindholm and Tkachuk. Waiting to show value in the playoffs like Haynes says, is not going to happen if some of these guys don't start playing with considerably more fire.

I would change my lines if there is no trades or calls ups coming. I think Bennett needs to play lots to be more impact player. And we need 2 offensive lines that can score. And 2 lines somehow play against other teams offensive lines.

I think we won't score many goals, but will have more balance, and top 2 lines can play more O zone.
And they should stop doing 3 man forecheck. They don't win the puck usually, and when other team gets out with the puck, there is always a dangerous chance to our end.

I can’t believe Johnny has 18 points while playing so poorly. A D is the correct grade.

He's not a smart hockey player. He deserves the criticism.

I don't think Brodie has been that bad. The first pairing to me is clearly worse when anyone but Brodie is on it.

No, he really doesn't. The only reason fans continue to defend him is because of his draft pedigree. If Bennett was a 5th round player, there is no way people would be saying he needs to play more to be impactful. Ice-time should be earned, not just given.

Busts happen. Cut your losses and move on imo.

I usually like Haynes but I don’t think I agree with him on a few guys here. Mangiapane wouldn’t get an A from me and Lucic and Brodie wouldn’t get D’s. I don’t think Stone has played enough to get a fair grade and Janko is the only guy on the team I think deserves an F.

Speaking of draft pedigree...

Sam Bennett needs 15 points in his next 19 games to match Nail Yakupov's NHL point totals.

Good news though, he's doubling Yakupov in PIMs.

I really don't get why Bennett gets singled out so heavily here.

With him on the ice, we're outscoring the opposition 8-4, he's 4th in expected goals for / 60 (after Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane), and he hasn't had to be sheltered to get those results. For all his flaws, his positive attributes are things we're sorely lacking elsewhere in our roster. For a $2.5M 3rd liner, he's been totally fine. If he was a 6th round pick he wouldn't face nearly the same criticism.

I think Haynes is being a bit to lenient on the younger players, and a bit too tough on the veterans.
