Even if it's only for two years before a decline, you make that move for Malkin. He would be the most dominant force on the team for those two years. Gaudreau would compliment him, not the other way around.

MAlkin would cost too much, and he’s not the ideal long term trade that best suits he Flames.

He’s on the wrong side of 30 (34) and would likely cost us Monahan, 1st, ++
Just not worth it for a guy who’s that old and injury prone.

Ah yes, trading Malkin to gain cap space and taking on 2 worse (i guess depends how you value Monahan and him now) players for more cap. Brilliant.

Doubt Malkin waives for Calgary so doesn't really matter.

Malkin is signed for 4 more years at 9.5, taking him to 36 years of age.

Monahan plus Brodie, you do that every day of the week.

Well Malkin isnt going to return any player that is better than he is...so not sure what your point is here?

Monahan as a #2 C is a pretty enviable situation, and adding a much needed dman as well but only adding 1.5M more to your payroll but filling 2 spots and getting younger?

Its not outrageous.

I really dont see how subtracting Monahan from this lineup makes the team better. We need one more center to ideally replace Jankowski. Not replace Monahan.

Well considering the offer was Monahan and Neal... not a d man.

Monahan has played at least 75 games every year, and over 80 in 3 of those 6 years. Malkin has played, since 13-14: 60, 69, 57, 62, 78 and 68 games.

Now maybe Monahan shouldn't have played that many but that's guesswork. Plus, I'm sure Malkin played hurt as well.

OK fair enough...but again you were saying that Malkin going for 2 worse players isnt something they would do...but there is no chance that any of the players coming back are as good as Malkin.

Trading Malkin would be to relieve cap pressure or fill multiple spots with about the same amount as he is making.

Unless the Flames go Philly mode and trade Gadreau and Monahan in the same offseason I would be hesitant to only trade 1 as they have basically played with each other since day 1 and have chemistry.

IMO, its all about building a #1B line. And this line should not be a line that checks other teams top lines. They need to get Tkachuk away from playing the hard minutes. Barring no big trades I think the Flames need to try Bennett at center again (or if he cannot handle it, swap with Lindholm and play his offwing). Jankowski is an interesting player - if he could only take the next step and play with more energy he would be the #2 center. He reminds me of Patrik Berglund. Maybe Magiapane should try the offwing and he scored a few offwing shots and seems to have a decent overall shot too.

1A Gaudreau - Monahan - ?
1B Tkachuk - Bennett - Lindholm
Checking ? - Backlund - ?
Energy Dube - Ryan - Hathaway

Bennett - Maybe back with Backlund like early days? But Id like to see him get a more offensive line and create downlow pressure. - he might have to play his offwing on top 6. OR He slots in as #2 C

I wouldn't trade Monahan to get Malkin. Age, contract, and they'd make a great 1-2 punch. With that said, Malkin would undoubtedly be the best player on this team, and would make us much stronger

I don't understand why Pittsburgh would trade Malkin. They would never get a Malkin-quality asset in return

Watching Eberle these playoffs and I feel he'd be the one I'd focus on if he makes it to FA. I think he could take a ton of pressure off of Gaudreau on the PP and give the 2nd line a much needed boost.

In general terms no, but if you replace Monahan with Malkin, as unlikely as that is, then yes, that makes the team better.

Yup, that's what happens when you're out in 5 playoff games.

As long as you ignore what a poor lazy player he has been, it would be a plug your nose and hope for the best situation.
