Default If you could pick one thing to happen at the trade deadline...

To call it a successful trade deadline, what would it be?

Russell pulls a Gaustad miracle and lands a 1st rounder as a result of so few defensemen on the market.

I wrote a lot about this earlier today on my website coincidentally - here's what I said:

Quote:
When I do my Trade Deadline live blog in two weeks, I’ll have a few expectations for the Flames, including:

- Trade 3-4 of Hudler, Jones, Smid, Ramo, Hiller, Raymond and Wideman. Preferably for draft picks.
- Trade Russell.
- Get a decent goaltender who isn’t a career backup.

I’m not going to try and speculate on trades. That’s hard, and I’ve already written a very long article which doesn’t need to be longer. However, I’d like to see the Flames try and target Fredrik Andersen out of Anaheim as a potential solution in net. I’d also like to throw a proposal out there:

Hiller/Ramo + 3rd

for

Andersen (+ cap dump?)

Make it work, Brad.

Somehow trade Wideman, Hiller, Bollig and Raymond for Edmonton's first round pick because we all know it'll be the first overall pick.
Since that won't happen, I'd be happy to get rid of those guys for any picks, even four 5th rounders would be a steal at this point.

Trade Wideman, Raymond, Hudler, Jones, Colborne, Bollig, Hiller and Russell.

Oh wait, one thing only?

Trade Wideman for whatever you can get. I honestly think it would be addition by subtraction.

Tyler Seguin and his $5.75 million cap hit to 2019 for a 7th-round pick?

Kris Russell for a 1st-round pick or equivalent prospect would be excellent.

Get a goalie that can give the team a chance at playoffs for the next 2-3 years.

Russell for more then I expected. It'd be a double win since we'd get more and not have to live with Bob's fugly overuse of him.

Get a goalie. Spend some assets if you have to. Aside from the usual names, ohers should be scoured too:

Joonas Korpisalo
Anton Forsberg
Micheal Hutchinson
Linus Ullmark
Malcom Subban (?)
Steve Mason
Micheal Neuvirth
Igor Shestygorkin

If I had to choose one thing. So many things to do. But I'd like the team to grab some goalies before the end of the season and see if one has some chemistry with the roster.

EDIT: Steve Smith might be available for a song given the rise of Louis Domingue. People won't like that cap hit though.

1 thing : Absolutely have to move the two UFAs with significant value, if it doesn't happen I'll be really disappointed. Seeing what Glencross brought in last year, I'd be disappointed with less than a 2nd for each of them. Especially as this is a weaker draft.

Beyond that, if Jones, Ramo or Hiller get moved I'll be thrilled... I'd like to see them all gone if there is anything to be had. At this stage in the year with 25 games left and being 10 points out, I think they would be totally justified in doing that and playing Ortio, Poulin and Poirier (or someone else from the farm) for the rest of the year.

Guys with more than a year left with bad contracts like Stajan, Smid, Raymond and Wideman... I think moving them is a pipe dream sadly, although maybe if Treliving gets creative and retains some money. I wouldn't be sad at all to see any of them go.

The thread title is asking a different question than the OP. So confusion!

One thing: Only one trade happens on deadline day. TSN and Sportsnet talk about it for 8 hours.

Successful: Hudler, Jones, and Russell traded. A new goalie acquired.

The OP is just a continuation of the question in the title. It's one question.

Acquire draft picks in exchange for the underwhelming veteran players.

Flames acquire Frederick Andersen in a trade.

Russell signs an extension with the Flames.

Hudler gets us a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

For what type of contract?

I'll be ok with an extension within a pretty specific price range.

Not for the numbers McKenzie was quoting. I'm hoping he takes a home town discount that worls for the Flames.
