I wonder if the Stone signing means Brodie still ends up getting traded to open cap space up.Maybe Brodie is headed to the Duck for RW Ondrej Kase would save the Flames 2 million roughly.Justin Faulk was rumored to be going there but maybe the deal has fallen through. Brodie can play the right side and that is what the Ducks are looking for.

I just don't see it.

With Valimaki on LTIR the Flames are not deep enough on the back end to move Brodie. A trade made sense back in mid-July, but as of today the Flames need Brodie, or they need a comparable replacement.

Hard to imagine the Ducks trading one of their best young forwards for a 1-year likely rental player. But the Ducks really don't know when to hold them and fold them, so who knows.

I highly doubt Brodie is still with the organization by this time next year.

Like Frolik, the Flames should have traded him months ago. Brodie, in my eyes, was always going to leave the organization by trade, free agency, or expansion. They've already tried to trade him in the Kadri deal, so that's a little awkward.

Since the Flames will likely be in contention for a home-playoff spot, I doubt they trade Brodie as a rental. It seems like the only option at this point is to let him walk as a UFA.

Honestly, I don't mind that too much, since contracts awarded to players on the wrong side of 30 tend to be pretty bad anyways. If I'm Brodie, I just hope that I get to play with Gio this year, as it would likely maximize the payout on the next contract.

Ditto. Man, what an unreal turn of events. Never seen anything quite like it.

Sure.

But you're talking about a team that was trying to make the playoffs, taking on a player with a $4M cap hit, and keeping him, not only for the remainder of that season, but most of the next.

That isn't acquiring a cap dump to get a 1st, that's acquiring a player that you are planning to have on your roster.

I am not addressing this again: it wasn't a cap dump of a player with negative value. Minnesota - a team with playoff aspirations - was clearly taking on the player.

Many think you are wrong.

If Minny wanted to really make the playoffs, they would have kept Zucker.

You speak for many?

And do you honestly think Minny didn't want to make the playoffs? What's more likely, you're wrong? Or the guy getting paid to have his team make the playoffs (to increase revenues for his bosses) didn't really want to make the playoffs?

The only thing I can find in the CBA about re-signing bought out players is if the player was bought out in a Compliance Buyout. That makes sense because the Compliance Buyouts carried no associated cap hit, which could have allowed teams to buyout expensive contracts with no cap hit, then re-sign the player for essentially the lost 1/3 of their money and that would be the only cap hit.

I can't see any restrictions to re-signing a player who was bought out with a normal buyout.
getbak immediately corrected everyone and was ignored. Myself included.

I think Frolik is good, but we're in a good spot where I think we can have a better top 6 with other players. That's a great problem to have!

But Frolik and his agent have made it very clear that he doesn't want to play outside of the top 6. For that reason, and $4M in our bottom 6... I hope he's gone

Good player, but I hope to see a better top 6 this year
