Exactly this.

Why does everyone forget the "minimum game vet" rule for preseason. Valimaki doesn't qualify as a vet. Nor does Dube. To get the right number of players for split squad and still give the older guys like Gio a break you need some PTO guys.

I don't hate this PTO. It wasn't all that long ago that this guy was highly touted. Hence, the contract he got. If I remember right, he is a fairly physical d-man as well.

No it's not.
With exhibition game quotes for veterans more and more PTOs are attending camps and filling those holes to avoid wearing out your own team.
Don't look for drama where it doesn't exist.

Versteeg went to the Oilers camp in 2016 on a PTO and turned down a roster offer by the Oilers to sign with the Flames and ended up being the #5 forward on the Flames when they made the Playoffs.
The PTO is an opportunity for the player to showcase himself and give some proof that he has overcome his injuries from last season. He picked up a lower body injury in the off season Then started the season and blocked a shot that shut him down for a month
He wore an A with the Flyers and the Flames may be stocking up on character players.
Stone probably goes somewhere on a PTO if he has any miles left in his body.

Should we make a poll on whether the Flames will sign MacDonald to a contract?

I wonder if this could also be Treliving doing something to improve a relationship with the agent. Does MacDonald have the same agent as any other players the Flames have, or might have interest in?

Maybe after we hear about how he is performing in training camp and preseason. Any poll now would be simply to satisfy the cynical vote.

It looks like his agent only has 3 clients: https://puckpedia.com/agent/rolland-hedges
The other two are Zykov and Budaj, so I'd say that's probably not the reason for this signing.

I was hoping for Mcquaid as a 7th defenseman too. Having him and Lucic around would eliminate any perceived lack of toughness.
Unfortunately, Mcquaid is apparently dealing with a pretty serious concussion so even if he recovers, it's unlikely he'll be as effective in the role he needs to play.

I predict Andrew McDonald will be in our top 4. Whether that is going to be a good thing or a bad thing I don't know at this time.
