Clearly he was running a high-end brothel for specialists who enjoy nude ice capades.

News Update Montgomery checked himself into rehab today:
https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/st...l-to-fire-him/
Quote:
Former Stars coach Jim Montgomery will enter an inpatient residential program for alcohol abuse, according to a statement released Friday to The Dallas Morning News.
It was Montgomery’s first public comment since the Stars fired him on Dec. 10 due to “unprofessional conduct.”
Here is Montgomery’s full statement:
“Losing my job as head coach of the Dallas Stars last month was a wake-up call. It was also the appropriate call. I let the team’s front office, staff and players down. More importantly, I let my wife and my family down. The team’s decision to end my role forced me to look into the mirror and decide whether I wanted to continue living a damaging lifestyle or get help. I decided to get help. I turned to professionals in the field of alcohol abuse for their guidance and counseling. It has been an overwhelming and a very humbling experience knowing that I am not alone.
“Today, with the unconditional support of my wife and family, and many close friends, I took another step forward by admitting myself into an inpatient residential program, where I intend to take the steps to be a better husband, father, friend, coach and mentor – one day at a time. It’s a process I am committed to. As I do this, I ask that my family’s privacy be respected. Thanks, Monty.”

Hopefully he gets the help he needs and emerges a changed man. I have plenty of respect for people who openly admit they need help and actively seek it.

I kind of see it as a positive that it took him a few weeks to get help. Instead of it just being reactionary to the event itself and maybe feeling like he was forced to do it, he took the time to evaluate where he was and took this next step with a bit of distance from the firing. It can be easy to get caught up with the whirlwind and then the seeds of doubt and negativity sabotage the process later on.

I’m guessing he was released after refusing treatment. I’d like to think the team would of given him a chance

I suspect he was fired for what he did while under the influence. There are some things that you simply can’t recover from within an organization and a change of scenery even after recovery is needed. Best of luck to the guy and whoever may have had to deal with his behavior up to this point.

Not only that, but I would have thought alcoholism would be treated as a disability issue (although who knows in Texas?), where an employer would have to tread very lightly on firing someone for an addiction issue.

Somebody I know told me he heard some credible info about bad behaviour that led to the firing. This statement certainly explains how it could have happened. A sad situation. Hopefully he turns this around.

In general, Texas is, (I believe the term is) an at-will state. Employers don’t need to even pretend to tread lightly, if I understand correctly

Texas is an at will state but there are still a whole host of scenarios under which former employees can prevail in a wrongful termination case. Without knowing any details, seems extremely unlikely he was fired for being an alcoholic. You can go to jail for what you do when drunk. You can most certainly lose your job for certain things too.

California is an at will state. You still need to build your case for firing someone -- at least if you don't like paying lawyers.

The Star-Telegram reporting that Montgomery would often have excessive public episodes of drinking and the Stars tried to give him time to alter the behavior.
https://www.star-telegram.com/sports...239005603.html
Quote:
According to sources familiar with the situation, Montgomery’s after-hours behavior and relationship with alcohol had been a point of concern during his first and only season with the franchise. Montgomery’s admission was not a new development with the franchise.
Sources said Montgomery’s relationship with alcohol was an issue and a contributing factor in the decision to remove him as coach.
Sources said Stars general manager Jim Nill had previously implored his hand-picked coach to change the behavior, and to stop with the excessive public episodes of drinking. The club tried to work with Montgomery on this, and to give him time and space to alter the behavior.
During the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, Montgomery was known to frequent the popular bar Moxies, which is owned by Dallas Stars owner Tom Gaglardi. The bar is attached to the high-end hotel, The Crescent, which is close to the American Airlines Center.
Now, a coach tossing back a few beers is not exactly a new phenomenon in the NHL. The league, and the sport, have a long history of players and coaches partaking in a few drinks. And “a few beers” in the NHL is measured by cases, not cans.
The problem was more of visibility; the head coach of the Dallas Stars was out frequently, drinking a bit too much, often in the bar owned by the same man who signed his checks.
It was a bad enough look that the GM had to talk to his head coach about it, and essentially issue a warning. The club was aware that Montgomery had struggled with this before.
