you could always supplement your income by creating forgeries, ones that put doubt into the history of religion and sell them to the church. I hear it's very profitable.

I grew up LDS and this takes me back to the Mark Hoffman (salamander papers) forgeries.
Its quite a story. Religion, monied collectors, document expert, theological crisis, forgeries and ends in mail bombs and murder.

This seems timely for the thread.

German-based scholars tested the fragments and found that five "show characteristics inconsistent with ancient origin and therefore will no longer be displayed at the museum."
"Though we had hoped the testing would render different results, this is an opportunity to educate the public on the importance of verifying the authenticity of rare biblical artifacts, the elaborate testing process undertaken and our commitment to transparency," said Jeffrey Kloha, Ph.D., chief curatorial officer for Museum of the Bible. "As an educational institution entrusted with cultural heritage, the museum upholds and adheres to all museum and ethical guidelines on collection care, research and display."

I am in a bit of a rush right now, but will update tomorrow...
I am at a hotel in DC; flying out first thing in the morning tomorrow. I just had a chat with a reporter from CBS News. He is sending a car over to pick me up and take me to the studio for an interview to be aired as part of "CBS This Morning" tomorrow AM.

I am actually quoted in the article:
Quote:
Davis, who studied the fragments for the Museum of the Bible, said Monday's news about the fakes felt like bittersweet vindication. His takeaway: Evangelicals and others whose faith motivates them to collect artifacts should be very careful with antiquities dealers eager to pique their interest in supposedly ancient scraps of scripture.
"These good intentions that draw from a place of faith are subject to some really gross manipulations," Davis said, "and that is a big part of what has happened here."
The scholar said he believes 2-4 of the Greens' 16 fragments may be authentic, but that at least 8 are fake.

Dont forget to mention that at least 84% of fakes originate from Edmonton and that they're just No Good.

I had to bump this thread.
Textcritic, if I'm not mistaken, this is going to air November 6th.
I hope I'm not stealing your thunder.

Dammit!
Thunder stolen.
Anyhow, please take note of the very prominently displayed Flames T-Shirt in the trailer.

As long as there are no allusions to any Da Vinci Code mumbo-jumbo, I have expectations that it will be a really interesting show. Thankfully PBS doesn't pander to that demographic (I am looking at you, History Channel).
