I am bumping this thread with a new piece that I wrote for the LA Review of Books blog, Marginalia:

Their extravagant spending habits are guided by a strong, overarching theological interest in the text and formation of the Bible. They aim to produce eclectic collections of artefacts that project quite a specific narrative about the bible’s truth and reliability. For example, SWBTS acquired fragments in 2009–2010, which they featured in a public exhibition in 2012. Their collection includes an especially unusual fragment containing four lines of text that preserves parts of Leviticus 20:24 and 18:28-30 subsequently, in that order. The second passage stems from a notorious proscription against homosexuality, widely regarded as a significant theological touchstone by many Evangelical Christians. Bruce McCoy, the director of the Seminary’s exhibition said in a 2013 interview that this fragment commanded an especially high purchase price precisely because “the particular passage is a timeless truth from God’s word to the global culture today.” This is a special case, but it illustrates an important reality in today’s market for “biblical antiquities”: private collectors are willing and able to pay exorbitant costs to own even small scraps of the history of the Bible, and they are willing to pay an even higher price for fragments that refer to touchstones of contemporary political debates. Furthermore, some believe that their philanthropic endeavors satisfy a confessional directive to ensure and promote the integrity of the Bible.

How fragile.

This is really cool—something I didn’t know about until I encountered this thread this morning. Congratulations on your work on this —it must feel good to finally get some recognition!

This thread is fascinating! Also anyone who has an interest I highly recommend watching 'White Collar'. While it's definitely not real it's one of my favorite series for the same reason I find this thread interesting. Nice work textcritic I love the shroud of mystery over all these religious texts and your wading through it all, well done.

This is the part of the movie where Textcritic is going to be threatened by a guy in a turban with a sword.

Thanks, everyone.

FYI, I am pretty excited about an opportunity to travel to Australia in Sept and participate in a conference in forged antiquities.

I would love to do a documentary of this story. I think it'd make a really cool podcast series.

Also Laura Croft is no angel to antiquities, let’s not give her a free pass.

Another update:

I had a long phone conversation this AM with a producer from a NY based film company that is beginning work on a new documentary on the Dead Sea Scrolls for PBS NOVA. They will begin filming in Oct/Nov, and my work on modern forgeries will be featured prominently.

... I will also be speaking with a producer from Discovery's "Expedition Unknown" next week.

Is there some way to drop an E=NG reference into the interviews?

"you know, modern forgeries are a lot like the Edmonton Oilers. They are no good and no one can save them. No one."

I would be satisfied with just a reference in ancient Hebrew, Latin or Aramaic. "And Christ prayed for Edmontonians, but he was certain they were unrepentant in their ways, so Christ said, 'Edmonton D'aNP,aKHeM B'aD,LoA D'Ma+eAB,iYN (E=NG)."

That’s not half bad!

How about I wear an item of Flames apparel? I could swap out one of my Iron Maiden or Kvelertak shirts for the flaming-C?
