Nope.

When a player is placed on LTIR, their cap hit remains on the teams cap payroll and it continues to count as it always did. It also does not provide the club with additional cap-space savings that can be banked for future use while the team operates above the salary cap. Instead, LTIR provides relief if the club's averaged club salary, or payroll, begins to exceed the upper limit. The amount of relief that the club receives is calculated on the day the player is placed on LTIR.

Does that $92,050,000 figure include Horton and Clarkson's money?

Dear eight pound six ounce baby Jesus, please give David Clarkson the motivation and good health to show up at Leafs training camp for that would truly be awesome.

NHL needs to fix LTIR for players that have real career ending injuries.

Just have them go on an “Injured Retired” list or something where they keep getting paid but don’t count against the cap.

The trading of these contracts makes the NHL look so bush league.

If Marner signs a $12M offer sheet can the Leafs afford to match it?

2013-14
As a UFA he signs a 7 year 36 million dollar contract.

He plays 60 games with 5 goals and 11 points.

2014-15
He plays 61 games with 10 goals and 15 points, and is traded to Clb.

15-16
Plays 23 games with 4 points.

16-17
Fails physical, goes on LTIR. Hasn't been heard from since.

Worst UFA signing ever?

After paying Brzgalov 16.5M in 2 years, the Flyers bought out the remainder of his contract, an additional 23M. 40M for 99 sub-par regular season games with the Flyers. (EDIT: The second season was lockout shortened so they only had to pay him about 37M)

And just a reminder, while not UFA, the Islanders will be paying Rick DiPietro until 2029.

The Clarkson contract was quite a bit worse than the Neal contract simply because Neal had 10 straight 20-goal seasons before he became a free agent. You could probably guess a drop-off was coming based on his age but with Clarkson, he was what he was for the most part: a 20-30 point third and fourth liner who could grind it up. Problem was, he had one 30-goal outlier season and then followed that up with a lockout-shortened year where he had 18.

And the best part is that when the Flyers signed Brzgalov, they jumped their existing goalie Bobo who was deemed not good enough.

Much like the Oilers dumping Dubynyk, it was the team, not the goalie.

According to Mirtle in the Athletic, Clarkson's contract is indeed insured; insurance pays 800,000 and the Leafs are on the hook for another 200,000.

Las Vegas : Hey Toronto, did you want to take this pain in the ass contract off our hands ?

Toronto : Yeah sure ! Did you want a decent goalie prospect too while we are at it ?

Las Vegas : Ummm....sure....lol

Toronto : OK deal !!!

In all seriousness though, I thought Toronto was high on Sparks ? or was this Sparks asking to be moved out for more opportunity ?

Sparks lost his job down the stretch and it was obvious the Leafs no longer hand any confidence in him.

Would assume Hutchinson has the inside track with Neuvirth getting a good look.

I'm not huge on him myself, but, I'm no expert on him. Just thought Toronto purposely kept him in the fold cause they really liked him ?

Might like the player, but the skill isn’t there. Just the size.
