Is it certain that the qualifying round doesn't count as playoffs? Will be glorious if the oilers miss 14 out of 15 years!

I heard over Hockeycentral at Noon that (trigger warning) Eric Francis was tweeting that he heard camps won't open until August. I have since seen several tweets from more reputable insiders that mid July is still the plan.
So yeah, eat #### Francis.

It would make no sense for the play-in round to count as "playoffs." So yes, when the Oilers are eliminated by Chicago it will mean precisely that: five years with Connor McDavid, and only one playoff appearance.
Edmonton is no good.

The NHL hasn't explicitly said so in so many words, but the overriding message is that the regular season is over, but the play in round does not count as "the playoffs". The playoffs start after the play in round.
So the play in round is neither regular season nor playoffs - it's its own thing.

Why eat ####?
All he is doing is reporting what he's heard. Is it totally unreasonable to think, given all the uncertain factors, that camp opening in August is a possibility?
I get that everyone likes to jump on Francis, but stuff like this is really immature and doesn't make this site look good.

Francis does nothing but post negative news or take the negative approach. Seems like he's only happy if he's stirring the pot IMO
Sorry you felt like it was immature but I don't think it makes the site look bad.

That’s not true. That’s your take on Francis comments and articles. I actually agree with a bunch of stuff Francis says. I also think he has some left field comments .

What's "negative" about saying he heard that camos might be pushed back a couple weeks?

Everyone was saying mid July. The NHL was hoping for mid July. A guy I feel is negative most of the time out of the blue suggests August, because (again, IMO) he has to be the one to break bad or in this case we'll call it disappointing news.
Sorry folks. Honestly didn't mean to stir it up that much. I'll do better.

Which is the same complaint you had about Pierre Lebrun.
The reality is that there are hurdles to cross to return to play. I'm excited about the possibilities of sports returning, but I'm also interested in realistic assessments of the challenges of doing that, and the probabilities of it happening within certain timelines. The role of the media isn't to cheer lead but rather to cover stories from various angles, and for that to happen, you need different voices. I think sometimes there are those that are intentionally contrarian - Dowbiggin being the biggest example. And I can say that with certainty because he told me he does it. I'm not sure if Francis is that or not - but there is a role for contrarians and skeptics in the media.
Anyways it's an interesting conversation. All good.

Throwing caution to the wind is not being negative. Yes Francis often likes to play the role of contrarian but as Jiri said there's a lot of hurdles to be crossed before this can be started up and it's reasonable to expect a minor delay or setback as there are a lot of moving parts involved. Maybe Francis is wrong or maybe he heard something legit that the league is trying to keep under wraps.

Sounds like a typical out of left field, misinformed Francis report.

Treliving had a great one-liner in his remarks on the weekly media conference call today. He noted that he doesn't have much new information and closed with "Other than not knowing when we're starting or where we're going, I'll answer anything else you got."
There's a LOT of things even teams don't know right now because the details haven't been worked out quite yet. (Or can't be worked out until other things get ironed out.)

Is LeBrun the guy that had the tweet a week or so ago, where he included the "baby steps, people, baby steps" comment?
It's that kind of officious tone I could do without.

Does the NHL have a contingency plan for a Covid outbreak during the playing rounds?
House of cards.
Edit: I get it, they have to try...
