Okay, if you want to hold him out for special reasons like that, fine, but that doesn't place him 11th on the depth chart... and teams usually don't let that sort of thing dictate their lineup when the other alternative doesn't give the team the best possible chance to win.

Obviously he's been out for a long time, but everyone is going to have to go through a training camp in any event, so he should be able to get back up to speed. Leaving all other considerations aside except hockey, Valimaki is absolutely one of the Flames' 7 best defencemen.

Is that for sure?

I thought i heard, and i may have completely confused what was said, that Ovechkin would win it because he/the Caps had played fewer games.

Yes, they are co-winners.

Yeah they don't count games played in the rocket race. When Nash, Kovalchuk and Iginla tied in 2004 they didn't all play the same number of games but they all won the trophy.

Bossy, Lemieux and Bure have more goals per game, but what Alex has been able to do for so long is amazing.

The Yotes are wearing their retros for all "home" games in the playoffs...

I hope a similar announcement is coming soon from the Flames.

From The Athletic (subscription required), a look at what Vegas has to offer as a hub city (hint, it's everything): https://theathletic.com/1845595/2020...be-a-hub-city/

There are 14,000 hotel rooms in just the four hotels on the corners of Tropicana and Las Vegas Blvd. MGM Resorts owns 3 of them, plus multiple other resorts to the north and south of T-Mobile Arena. Feeding and housing everyone shouldn't be a problem.

Ice availability isn't as big as in the Canadian cities, but they do have three arenas that have or will play host to at least AHL level games, including the MGM Grand Garden Arena, The Orleans Arena (which will be home to the Golden Knights' AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights, for at least two seasons), and the T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights' practice facility has two sheets of ice that are NHL calibre for practices.

The biggest question mark is the planned re-opening of the Strip next week. If too many people pour in, it might hurt the NHL's plans to keep everything isolated. If there's an explosion in COVID cases, the whole plan could fall apart.

This quote is interesting:
Quote:
“I think Vegas is a great destination,” Golden Knights owner Bill Foley said Thursday. “We have the hotels all around T-Mobile Arena to satisfy the needs. I believe it would be great for Vegas. The downside is that possibly we (the Golden Knights) wouldn’t be able to play in Vegas. They tend to think that’s an unfair advantage.

“But if Vegas is a hub city, I know the resort industry will do a great job, and we’ll make sure everyone gets as much ice time as they need around town.”
Yet another mention of not allowing the host city's team to play in that city. Given the list of cities that Bettman mentioned, I wonder if we might see the Western Conference resume play in LA/Anaheim with the Eastern Conference playing its games in Vegas? That would be pretty much the only way to keep the host team from playing at home.

I haven't followed this as closely as many of you folks have but has anyone from Vegas formally come out and said they would be interested in hosting the NHL? While it has many benefits it also requires a pretty big commitment from the city, state, hotels and the venues. For T-Mobile in particular, if they commit to the NHL for three months, or whatever, that means their ability to host anything else is basically zero.

What else would T-Moblie Arena host amid a large gathering ban?

I'm sure the NHL has been in close contact with all the potential hub cities.

Using hockey-reference adjusted goals:

Ovy 798 AG/1152gp = .693

Lemieux 616AG/915gp = .673

Bure 463 AG/760gp = .609

Bossy 461 AG/752 gp = .613

Obviously Ovy hasn't had much time to produce at a lower lever yet - the other guys had 63-120ish games where they were producing below their usual levels at the end of their careers.

Ovy has 706 in 1152 games = .613 actual goals
Bossy 573 in 752 -= .762 actual goals
Why use adjusted goals, use actual totals.

This is an NHL project, they wouldn't be looking for volunteers, hosts, etc... Everyone position involved will we a paid position. Given what tourism is going to look like, and that its Vegas, 600 plus hotel rooms for a couple of weeks and dropping as the playoffs progress is nothing. If they have to block of floors at a time, that won't be a problem as hotels occupancy will be a fraction of capacity. They would need 25 charter buses to begin play to shuttle teams to and from the Summerlin practice facility. Catering and feeding the players and their (potential) families would be a breeze. As for T Mobil, their calendar is blank until October 11. The biggest concern has to be keeping the players and staff in their bubble, I can actually see a couple of the casinos having players only areas on the gambling floor.

With literally every event in an event city cancelled for there's no question the city and Clark County will have no problem pulling this off. These playoffs are small potatoes to typical Vegas events and conventions.

... Because that's the whole point of adjusted goals? The actual goal totals are misleading because of different scoring rates in different eras? If Ovechkin played in Bossy's era he'd have 800+ already.

Yes, all of the cities that Bettman mentioned the other day have formally applied to be hub cities.

In the story I posted from The Athletic, it mentions that Vegas has an advantage because the league would only need to deal with one company for all the non-hockey things. MGM Resorts International owns a significant number of hotels on the Strip, including all of the ones in close proximity to T-Mobile, except the Tropicana. They also own a minority stake in the T-Mobile Arena (along with Kings' owner AEG, which operates the building) and own and operate the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

In most other cities, coordinating everything will mean dealing with a large number of different companies. In Vegas, it will basically be MGM, AEG, and the Golden Knights.

Even if everything else returns to normal in Vegas, they're still going to see a huge drop in Convention/Conference/Trade Show attendance through the rest of the year. I always find it amazing any time I'm in Vegas, I end up talking to some guy at the poker table who's in town for some 5000 person convention for an industry I never even knew existed. The NHL setting up shop for 3 months won't even come close to replacing the losses from just those smallish conventions.
