It's crazy, but somehow this Raptors team looks even better so far this year then they did last year.

Great first half, but 49 points for the Jazz in the third quarter is kind of nuts

Kawhi night is tonight. Hopefully his CPU lets him show a little emotion.

Toronto has to be aggressive in re-signing their GM. If it looks as if he will not, a trade to NY could extent the Raptors competitive window.

Ujiri is under contract with the reigning NBA champion Toronto Raptors through the 2020-21 season, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times. If Dolan wants to bring Ujiri down from the north to replace the embattled Steve Mills before next season, he will have to pay Ujiri handsomely and surrender assets to the Raptors.
|
Interesting. If I were the Raptors, I would give him whatever he wanted to stay.

Actually Ujiri is President and Bobby Webster is the GM. While he keeps a lower profile there was an article in the Athletic today suggesting Webster is an (equally?) important piece of the management team and a rising star. If the Raptors really do have two current and/or upcoming stars it seems inevitable that at least one would move on before too long.

The suggested return on Ujiri, if the move happens during the season, is a first plus. NY is a lottery team.

The problem I see is that Masai is the President. Who would do the negotiations? The GM? Such an odd thing for a President to get traded for assets.

It's RJ Barrett or bust. I hope they keep him though.

Just to be clear, I think Ujiri IMO is worth at least 5 unprotected 1st rounders IMO, and a team like NY wouldn't want to give that up I don't think. So I say keep Ujiri as he's virtually priceless.
Now, today's game has been atrociously officiated. The NBA really has no intention of having a fairly officiated league.

Yup, seemed to be a solid comeback but Powell's throwaways seemed to turn the tide. I really like the makeup of this team, but Powell is the one guy I think they gotta get rid of. Decent tools, virtually no toolbox.

Lowry and Ibaka murdered this one, just can’t miss that many open shots against anybody...

I don't mind Powell, but with Powell, Davis, Lowry, and FVV we have 4 guys 6'4 and under all playing big minutes. Masai will have to look at the makeup of this team and decide how he wants to move forward.
Lowry is as polarizing as ever. When he's on he's the best we have, but every time he has a game like tonight we struggle.

Another 50 point night for Harden. Rockets have been a lot of fun to watch this year.

Yeah, the team's going to have a massive turnover the next two years with Ibaka, FVV, and Gasol all expiring this year, and Lowry the next. They probably want to keep cap space for 2021, unless something amazing comes along. Powell's contract is kinda a rarity on this roster: affordable, and locked up long-term. I'd love to see him swapped for a young, decent big-man on a similar contract, but I'm not sure who that would be.
I'm really curious about FVV's value this offseason. On the one hand, he was a key player on a championship-winning team. On the other hand, he goes entirely against the current trend of long, athletic PGs, and PG is probably the deepest position in the game right now. I've heard people talking about Malcolm Brogdon as a comparable ($22 million), but I don't think that happens, especially with fewer teams having cap space this year, and I think $18 million is more likely. But it might be worth holding onto Powell's contract until the Raptors know how FVV's contract shakes out, and how Davis looks with a bit more experience.

Personally I'm all in for FVV. I'm not so much of a talent evaluator in fairness, but he's really been consistent in the past year, and as we know basketball throws stupid money at mediocre players. In the case of Fred, I truly see him as the heir apparent to Lowry, and that's right now. I can assure you with the season they had he will get minimum $22MM from some team. The Raps are in a tough spot with the position though given what you said. If Masai wants to be ruthless, I'd deal Kyle and let Fred take over. Though I'm 99% certain that Masai doesn't want to burn that bridge. The team doing so well to start the season also has really messed up any chance at sweeping changes.
