Russia takes the prize by a long shot, that is not to say the US is perfect, far from it. But Russia/USSR has a longer list of internal and external nastiness.

It wouldn't have been Brazilian ships, but Brazil was a major destination for slaves for the Portuguese ships.

Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, England and France, were the main triangular trading countries.

Yeah, I knew about the destination.

You can still see the areas in Barbados where the slave ships landed. I also had a very odd night on the piss in Barbados with some locals. They told me about why Caribbean is like it is, very very odd.

To be honest, this whole discussion of the last few pages has taken away from the ongoing gun issue in the US, I bet the NRA is happy.

Realistically ships sailed under many flags, including Brazil's, especially after their own countries banned slavery in the early 19th century.

I wonder if the next step will be to rename the borough of Queens in New York. Apparently it is named after Catherine of Braganza, who was both married into the British royal family and a blood member of the Portuguese royal house. Both of which were profiteers from slavery in the Americas.

It actually did come up in the 1990s when they were going to erect a statue in her honour. African Americans, as well as some other groups protested and it was deemed inappropriate given the history.

For that matter then, the Confederate flag should be a no-brainer as far as being inappropriate goes.

I suspect that is why right wing politicians were so quick to jump to it, I actually think it shows a bit of desperation on the NRA's part and an indication that less and less Americans own and support guns these days.

Every time we have a grim massacre something, anything is clutched at as a sop to explain it other than the obvious, that most people shouldn't have guns.
