Bit more expensive but not unlike the Zadorov deal last year in terms of the length and style of the contract. Works good for both and the player is betting on themselves a little as well.

Love the deal for the team. That contract would look ugly over a 6+ year term

Kings are on the verge of taking over the division. Kopitar's contract is up after this year and they have tons of youth that is going to give them a big boost soon.
Vilardi's deal will be an interesting one. If they get him for a reasonable cap hit for 3 years, they are set for at least 2 years after this year.

Still will be a pretty young guy in 2 years and can still cash in with a big contract after this one if he plays well. Good deal for both teams, although I think I read somewhere the Kings were looking for something longer, but Gavrikov wanted the short deal.

and they have a boatload of cap coming up to go hard after Drai/Matthews/Mcdavid if any of them hit UFA

It's just as likely that in two years time he'll get a much better contract.
I expect it's only two years because the player wanted a larger cap hit over a longer period.

The term coincidently aligns with when they will want to take a run at Draisaitl.

It doesn't really matter with this deal but next CBA the league needs to do something to rein in signing bonuses.

Because it allows the richer teams to pay more money up front and protect players from things likely buyouts, work stoppages etc.
A more subtle way to allow richer teams to give better deals.

Wow. Friedman nailed this one on 32 thoughts to a tee. Against better advice, Gavrikov wanted two years vs longer even though it was possible. He wants to be signing another deal when cap is higher.

The only team that would be financially deterred from paying signing bonuses would be ARI. And even then, one or two of them would be no problem

Yet the richer teams do it more often.

I don't know about taking over the division, but i would say there's a clear top 3 in the division and Calgary will be in tough to keep up with that group.

I don’t think the players would have any interest in going on strike to fight for less money upfront over the term of their contacts.

I can see a situation where the kings wanted 4-5 years, but he felt like trying to get a retirement contract in his 30s would be risky. When this comes up then cap is higher and he's still in his 20s. Likely tries for a 5-6 year deal then.
