Really? Eichel has been fine the years he has been healthy. He's also been a 2 way force in these playoffs. The only seasons he has not been worth it he was on LTIR and Buffalo was rebuilding so they weren't in a position to take advantage of the cap relief.

For Buffalo Eichel didn't work out considering the $$$
10M year
15M signing bonus
Career high 78 points
Zero playoff appearances
Left disgruntled

So no playoffs is on 1 player? 82 points is his career high and 78 in 68 is also basically a 90-point year.
Injuries are the only issue with this contract. Eichel also has seemed to make a full recovery from his neck issues. Only time will tell if he made the right choice but dispute on what surgery was the best route does not make it a bad contract.

Now that's the age when you sign a guy for 8 years.

I still can't believe Treliving didn't just open the vault on an Eichel trade.

Again it didn't work out FOR BUFFALO
Prorating stats is nice and all but a guy not being able to stay healthy is not a plus it's another risk of a long term deal. Also when he signed that deal 10M was near the very top of NHL salaries

Between Tkachuk, Bennett, Stone and Eichel, plus not extending Gaudreau when they had the chance, it’s maddening to think how good this team could and should be right now.

Seems like he did but they didn't want Tkachuk because he wouldn't sign there either

Stone wouldn't sign here though so he can have a pass on that one

Krebs hasn't been great but Tuch has been great for Buffalo. Ostlund also could be a big piece from that trade.
Buffalo did just fine because they locked up an elite player for 8 years.
Vegas did just fine as they are likely to be lifting the cup in about a week or so.

Gaudreau
Eichel
Tkachuk
Lindholm
They’d have been a top-5 team in the west for five years with that core.
But, they’re not, and so we move on.

We have no Tkachuk if have Eichel.
So it's Eichel Lindholm Gaudreau.

What are you trading for Eichel?

You could probably equate Krebs to Pelletier or Zary.
The picks, doable.
But where did we have an Alex Tuch? Not to mention the personal piece with Tuch (wanting to be in Buffalo long term).
It's likely that our Tuch would have been Lindholm.
So, Eichel for Lindholm, Pelletier, 1st, 2nd...and if they aren't comfortable with Lindholm signing a long-term extension, the deal still doesn't work.

At the time Tuch and Mangiapane had similar stats. BUT Tuch is obviously bigger, is from Buffalo, and was on a better career curve.
IIRC Calgary offered Pelletier and/or Zary and they wanted Krebs.

Yeah Mang was actually remarkably similar when it comes to production:
Mang 20/21: 32pts in 56 games
Tuch 20/21: 33pts in 55 games
6'4" vs. 5'10" likely a big part of it, and yeah the Buffalo connection.
When you look at Tuch Vs. Mang since then...Buffalo made the right choice. It's why I think the ask should have been Lindholm rather than Mang.
It's painful to look back to where the team was and where the team is now. Just a massive erosion of the talent level in the last 12 months. Father time, players leaving...just pain.

Could have been Andersson or Hanifin. Also I don't think Tkachuk was ever actually ever offered from what Adams said. Not sure why Adams would lie on it. I think they would have pulled the trigger if so.
After Buffalo traded Eichel to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday, Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams said Tkachuk's name hadn't been floated in negotiations about a deal.
"It's not accurate. That was not correct in terms of players that were being tossed around," Adams said of the rumor involving Tkachuk, according to The Athletic's John Vogl. "That's an unfortunate thing when those types of reports go out."

If we had managed to pull off a deal that then allowed us to have Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and Eichel all here long term? Ah...dreams.

He did…. Buffalo took the guy they knew would sign long term Vs the guy who was noncommittal.

Yeah, I think Treliving got a little too cute on it. Easy to say in hindsight now but even at the time I was down for a Tkachuk/Eichel swap.
