Backs should have been. Ship has sailed I think.

I'd rather have a younger C that can grow with the core over the next 5-10 years as a player and a captain. Rasmus is my vote, he has the passion and grit to be a good captain, he also has the charisma that I think would serve him well dealing with the media.
Nothing against Backs, but if he was going to be given the C it should of been a few years ago after the Gio departure

Weegar might prove to be the guy if they don't give it to Backlund.

Who is leaking all this exit interview information? It seems like something that should be kept confidential or players will stop being candid in the future.

I think so too. And it's tough to forget he asked for a trade.
It's rare when someone wants to be a Flame for his whole career, but sometimes you must let go of sentimentality for the organization's good. The last bit has pushed home the mantra of cheer for the logo on the front, not the name on the back.

Exactly. Why does someone need to have a "C" on their jersey to run the room?!

I think having one now would be a good thing primarily because it would be a departure from the previous coach's unspoken inference that nobody was deserving of the title.
Change can be good.

Honestly even $3M might be too much at age 35.

After the season Backlund just had you are expecting and thinking that $3M might be too much? Even a modest raise to $5.5M might not be enough if he has another season even remotely close again this year.

For me I think that ship has sailed. Should have happened right after gio left. He has requested a trade twice now and wants to be on legit contending team. I’m not sure that’s Calgary. As far as I’m concerned he is probably down around 5-6 of order of importance for players this off season .

Honestly I’m sure he meant a 3m AAV, he’s got to drop off and fast with age

His offensive numbers were good but his defensive game is starting to erode. If Backlund wants money anywhere near what he makes now you ship him out the door. Personally I would anyhow, I think a change of scenery would be good for both parties. The guy has asked out for two straight years now, grant him it.

I am having a tough time with the possible ultimatum that Conroy is being given. I hope it's not Backs trying to take advantage of a new GM and putting him on the spot. I don't see Backs like that though. It's probably him telling management that he's been here through thick and thin and feels he has the voice to guide the room. If that's the case, an extension must be in place. I don't want a captain for one year and then gone afterwards. Probably the toughest UFA of 2024 for Conroy to deal with.

Yep, he should have been named when Gio left. But it’s too late for him now. I feel like Weegar or Andersson is the guy now.
But I want Backlund traded at this point.

Although I am a fan of Backs, I believe he should be traded immediately. His bone-headed line change in overtime towards the end of the season, which cost the game, should be considered a tradeable offense on its own. Additionally, he has requested to be traded at least twice.

Don't understand the 'ship has sailed' comments. Do what's best for the team and players: if giving it to Backlund for one year is best for the team, then do that.
The "C" is an honorary title more than anything.
Chara had the C forever in Boston, but everyone knew Bergeron was the guy.
Landeskog is holding the C hostage, but everyone knows MacKinnon is the guy.
I'd want to see Backlund honoured with the C given his tenure and play, but it if you're a real leader, it shouldn't really matter.

But if he does not re-sign this summer is it not better to try and trade him?
A lot depends on who wants to stay.
I'm good with giving him the C and he re-signs a 1-year extension for $2 mil with bonuses.
If he won't commit, I'd trade him with some salary retained to get a quality return.
