FAA is out. Very rusty. He was up a break in the 2nd but gave it back. Then he led 5-3 in the tiebreaker and lost the last 4 points.

Felix loses 6-4 7-6(5) to Alexei Popyrin. I thought Felix played okay, but that's the best match of Popyrin's career by a fair margin.

Yoshi Nishioka also eliminated Holger Rune in the Adelaide tourney in three sets. All the top contenders are dropping out early making it smooth sailing for Novak.

Better news in Auckland for the Canadians as both Rebecca Marino and Leylah Fernandez won their matches in straight sets.

I actually think the constant badgering from reporters asking about his retirement is pissing him off enough that he's going to have a very motivated year. channeling negative energy into victory is a Djokovic speciality, but Rafa is going to learn the secret in 2023.

No wonder Popyrin played so well against Felix, he was wearing these shoes...

Zheng Qinwen is certainly one to watch on the WTA circuit.

Genie said on I/G that she had food poisoning- not injured.

United Cup has been fun. Mannarino choked again against Gojo so that puts Croatia into the next round.

Croatia vs Greece
Italy vs Poland
US vs GB

The 3 winners plus the next best make the semis.

Stefanos Sakellaridis won his match for Greece and nearly doubled his ranking points from 23 to 43. Went from ranked 803 to 646!

Yeah, it's been pretty good, but some tweaks to the format and scheduling need to be made in my opinion. I think there's too many countries competing as well (I think four groups of three countries where each group winner advances would make things much more straight-forward).

United Cup definitely needs a shake-up. I felt it was sour grapes from Rafa but he does have a point: must be tough to get mentally prepared for a meaningless match.

I think one of the big attractions (it was for the Hopman Cup as well) are the mixed doubles where you hope to see top singles players from the ATP and WTA playing together. Some fans bought tickets hoping to see Rafa and Badosa play mixed doubles, but they pulled out an hour before the match started.
