He didn't just chug a beer, he did this a few months ago. So people should have known this before voting, and Smith certainly knew before giving him the job. Failing failures all around.

Wait until feces cookie gets assigned a Ministry. It's only a matter of time.

My bad.. I skipped past the dates and went straight to outrage..
Of course now I know he did this BEFORE being named the Minister only inflates the outrage.

It's even worse: he did this in the Legislature as a tribute to the Royal Canadian Legion. Let's call this exactly what it is: Alberta's new Minister of Mental Health and Addiction chugged a beer in what he thought was a show of support to Canadian veterans, a group that disproportionally suffers from PTSD and alcoholism more than the general populace.

Voter turnout actually dropped from the last election despite the record numbers of advance voting. And a pretty sizeable drop too, from 67.5% to 59.5%. But still ended up being 2nd highest in the past 5 elections.

I think this comes down exclusively to the gap between who people think the ANDP are and who they actually are. I know far too many people who have said "I just couldn't vote for the NDP", not realizing they are a classic Canadian style conservative party.

I think they bungled it. They had a golden opportunity and once they trotted out the tax hike it was an absolute dagger. I don’t see how anyone could argue otherwise, realistically. We all know people have fiscal concerns with the NDP and if they were the least bit self-aware they’d realize they should do everything they can to avoid playing into it. Instead they roll that out, and it wrecked them.

Can't really argue this. I really saw their support stall and the tides turn with this. They would have been better off just not announcing it until they were elected and take the heat for "you didn't promise that".

Hard to win in Alberta with the over representation of rural Alberta at the Legislature. The NDP were never going to win seats in rural Alberta in any real numbers. The corporate tax rate probably did not make a lick of difference in rural Alberta.
Hopefully the federal Liberals learned something from the Alberta election, you can really work with Pierre to drive the divide between rural and urban and win the next election. That divide cut the wrong way for the NDP but probably breaks differently in a federal election.

It's ridiculous a party can't run on a corporate tax hike that realistically has zero effect on voters other than providing stable government funding for the population. But it's toxic to even mention, but if you don't, you get burned for not campaigning on it. I hate how uneducated voters are.

The good news is once the UCP pass the dumbest law ever requiring referendums on tax hikes is that corporate tax hikes and taxes on high earners will be the only thing that can pass.
Hilariously ironic

If the parties / candidates were so misaligned from your values that you abstained, I don’t think your sitting on some moral pedestal right now. I think you’re just hoping to survive the next four years and are either enlightened or have a better option next time.
