So I seem to be having an issue with my BBQ.

I recently purchased A Weber Genesis off Facebook Marketplace and I can't seem to get it lit. I turn on the propane tank and I can smell natural gas. I press the ignitor button and I hear the tick, but it doesn't seem to catch. I tried looking for a small hole where I could put a lighter, but couldn't find one.

Any insights?

Have a look and see if it arcs when you push the button. Also, mine has a AA battery that I have to change occasionally .

Pull the grills and heat plates and try to light the burner itself. Before lighting it check to see that the ignitor is arcing properly and not obstructed or overly dirty. Change the batteries.

I had this problem with a NG Weber. It was suggested to me to get in the habit of shutting the gas off first, THEN the burner knobs on the bbq. Air entrapment and all that.

Funny, my old propane one was the opposite of that. If I turned off the tank, then the burners it would airlock every time, and I wouldn't get enough flow to light the next time. I could still smell it, but it was not full beans.

Yeah, for the igniter with batteries you should hear repetitive clicks, or more like snaps, when the button is pushed. If it’s not catching it might be the part of the frame where the igniter arcs to got bent and is too far away.

The igniters are easily accessible and BBQ Galore has them if there is something wrong with yours. Just take some pics that shows the model and everything. If you look underneath you should see the backside of the igniter. Take a pic of that so you can get the right one.

BBQ Galore has this great burger press on sale for stuffed and regular patties. It works great. I gave a few out at Christmas last year, but good for an upcoming Fathers Day(or for your list!)...

Spoiler!

Ya, I signed up about 6 months before I bought last year, and I've just never unsubscribed.

Default BBQ and Grilling megathread

Ok so I did a pork butt on the pellet smoker overnight for pulled pork. And now it looks like it’ll be done sooner than I thought.

Is there anything I can do to keep it “fresh” for a few hours before guests arrive?

I am going to be buying a BBQ for the first time and would love some advice. Something that can quickly feed a family of 6 and is propane. I also want something that is built to last but also don't want something extravagant since I am just getting started.

Any tips? Particular brands?

Wrap in towels then in a cooler and it will be hot for a long time.

How much do you want to spend, and do you really want propane? I just got a new grill last fall, and went NG, and would never consider otherwise if I was buying new. It was a bit of a pain to get the gas line to the Q, but worth it.

The big 3 brands are Broil King, Napoleon and Weber. I thought I wanted Napoleon, but the BK turned out to be the better buy.

Thanks for the help. Thinking of spending up to $500. Not sure what that might get me but will certainly check out those brands.

Interesting on the NG vs Propane - it might be worth getting an estimate on the gas line.

How far do you need to go from the gas meter? NG grills are also usually a little more, so with that and a gas line, and a grill for 6, you might find your budget a little light for that, so maybe propane would be better to fit in your budget.

For the first time makes it a little tricky.

Be mindful of buying a BBQ that meets but does not exceed your needs.

A few years ago I bought a Weber Spirit II e210. I put extra money into a Weber, but the trade off was to have a 2 burner unit, when I could have had a 5 unit burner BBQ from Walmart if I desired.

However, I found 3 burners was too big, I only ever used the space for 2, and the Walmart Special never seemed to last (mind you I live on the Atlantic Ocean, I doubt salt in the air eating your BBQ is a concern in Calgary).

My advice isn't for a specific unit, my advice is to take a step back and see what size you need, then buy a quality unit that meets that need.
