Did anyone really buy the 'found in a bar' story anyway?
The rumored date is June 22nd? Well damn. I better not be too broke after my LA trip.

I think it looks pretty good. It looks way more sturdy than the current models. I'll be very interested to hear all the specs and pricing. I would like to replace my cracked first generation iPhone with the new one.

I wonder if Motorola thought to get a patent on a phone with straight edges and sides...

I still think that thing is ugly and am glad because it will entice me to upgrade even less. Not that I could afford to upgrade my 3gs even if I wanted to. I'm hoping that my current phone lasts me the entire 3 years of my contract.
Constantly upping ones contract is bad for the consumer in general.

With Gruber's "stolen" assumption, does that mean Apple will go after them for buying stolen property?
Very good scoop, I assume engadget passed because they want to be in Apple's good books.

There is nothing preventing you from keeping your 3Gs for the length of your contract. It isn't like Apple bricks your iPhone remotely every time there is a refresh.

I never said there is, but phones do get old. Stuff happens, sometimes dropped, whatever.
Right now I'm in a contract with rogers stating I will keep their service and data for 3 years. So if two years into my contract something happens to my phone I have to buy another phone that will work with rogers, and one that works with data or I'm wasting money on that plan.
If my current phone lasts 3 years, then I can negotiate, possibly get a cheaper rate plan, they may throw some discounts on new phones at me.
I just have more flexibility without a contract.

Ahh, your beef is for how carriers screw us. I thought you were complaining about Apple's yearly refresh in general.

I'm not on a contract right now and I haven't gotten hardware from Rogers in a long time (6-7 years). I phoned them and they said I was eligible for a "discount" on the iPhone. Their discount was the same price that they have on the website. My discount apparently was me qualifying for the promotional rate. Which seems like nonsense to me because I would have assumed I would have got that pricing anyways. I didn't play hardball with the rogers rep I was just asking. Brutal.
Can you negotiate to get an iPhone?

Yeah, they had awesome rates for new contracts last year for the 3Gs. Most of us only having our 3G's for a year couldn't upgrade, so hopefully I'll be okay this year. I do know of one person though who basically had phone sex with a Rogers CSR for 45 and upgraded early though.

Knowing Rogers, they'll say you need 2.5 years of your contract before the renewal is allowed.

You can get the promo/new-plan/whatever pricing from Rogers if you're at least 2 years into your contract (if you have a smartphone). Or if you have no contract, obviously. I think it's fair - full-price iPhones are up to $800 and Blackberries are anywhere between 300 and 700. (I've seen some BlackBerries that you can basically upgrade to for either free or really cheap.)
I was supposed to be able to upgrade this month because I only have a regular phone, but apparently I can get anything BUT a smartphone and I have to wait another 3 months for the latter. Why, I don't know... considering they told me otherwise in January. Guess I'll have to either call CS and either b!tch or have phone sex with one of them to get this thing in June.

Probably because you don't have enough revenue yet on your contract for the smart phone upgrade.

Are iphones really $800 retail though?
Or I mean to say would they be if sold directly from apple or places that didn't care if you signed a contract or not.
I understand it has the option for a phone, but an itouch 32gig is $300 while my 32 gig iphone was the same price with a 3 year contract.
$500 for the phone feature?
I understand the demand and all that, but I think that it is the cell phone companies (rogers, at&t, telus etc) pressuring phone makers into inflating their prices a bit to get people to sign contracts.

iPhone users also get the firmware updates like 3.0 or 4.0 for free. iPod touch users are like fat chicks that need loving. They gotta pay.

IMO this could very likely be a free publicity stunt by Apple. In reality what do they have to lose? Get the phone out and see what the reaction is. If its not good fix it, likewise if the reaction is good push the release.
