Flames will not sign John Gilmour | UPD: signs with Rangers
according to Treliving. Thought he'd get a shot, but given the Flames' number of young defensemen in Stockton it's understandable if they're not convinced of him.
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Treliving also says #Flames do not intend to sign John Gilmour to an NHL contract at this time. Says AHL contract is an option, though.

Sucks, but at some point when you've drafted as many D men that the Flames have recently, you need to let some go. Either it's an AHL contract, or good luck somewhere else.

Let him go to the KHL and develop then come here and be our future captain.

Not a surprise. He wasn't a standout in college. If he wasn't a Flames draft pick I doubt many here who watched Jankowski would be clamouring for them to sign him.

Not sure he'll get an ELC from anyone but I would bet a lot of teams would want to try him in the AHL.

No one was ever clamouring.
He's a decent lower end prospect with some upside though, hopefully someone gives him a chance. With all the other Friar seniors gets signed or try outs in the last couple days, think he'll get one too.

Makes sense, especially with Wotherspoon and Kulak having a bit of a redemption year this year.
Nakladal
Kulak
Wotherspoon
Culkin
Kylington
Morrison
Andersson
Sieloff
Kanzig
Those 9 d-men will all likely be pros next year, and you have Hickey, Olias-Mattson, & Rafikov who potentially could become pros as well. Makes sense to leave some flexibility in terms of your contracts.
Gilmour had a good college career but in the end he is still another undersized d-man.

Hickey will go back to Boston University for his junior year, according to Treliving. No idea what the plan for Ollas-Mattsson and Rafikov is, I always kind of forget that those guys are in the system lol ...

Too bad he was drafted. Doesn't quite follow the same arc.

That is some outstanding organizational depth for the blueline.
I expect that we'll see some moved this summer as part of larger trades.

Nakladal will be in the NHL somewhere. Morrison is probably done with the Flames. Kanzig is probably ECHL bound. AHL might be too fast for his skating at this point. Should still be some room on the farm for a player or two.

I think he'll get signed elsewhere. He's better than Parisi, who signed a 2 year ELC with the Habs.
The winner in this is Ryan Culkin as he's probably our most underrated prospect right now but has gotten lost in the numbers game as Kulak did a year ago. People forget Culkin was right in the mix for a call up 13 months ago.

no, he signed a 2 yr ELC last spring and finished the season on an ATO in Adirondack. Just finished year one of the ELC.
Wotherspoon, Arnold, Agostino, Grant, Shore, Van Brabant , Elson and Poulin are the ones on expiring contracts (all RFA).

This isn't unexpected, but John plays a solid, dependable game. I'm a bit disappointed, truth be told.
Hopefully he signs an ATO or something with Stockton.

Let's assume Treliving can move Wideman this off-season and Smid is on IR for the year.
2016 NHL Flames Defense
Brodie Hamilton
Giordano Engelland
Jokipakka Nakladal (I'm guessing he gets re-signed)
Wotherspoon
2016 AHL Heat Defense
Kulak Kylington
Morrison Culkin
Sieloff Andersson
Kanzig
Yeah, I don't see much room for Gilmour. He would most likely need to start in the ECHL and do you want to take up one your 50 contract spots on a long shot?

All three will likely amount to nothing.
