St Louis sends Igor to a new lab
St Louis Picayuuune (AP)
GM Greg Bates jumped off of his couch long enough to swing a minor deal today moving goalie Igor Shesterkin to the Calgary Flames for prospect center Carson Focht and prospect defenseman Dylan Coghlan. The Blue's also received $750,000 in cash for use next season.
"Its tough letting Igor go" stated GM CaptainCrunch "He's a quality goaltender and I really got to know him when we were stitching bodies together in the lab".
Focht a prospect in the WHL with the Hitmen has scored 58 goals and 120 points in the last 120 games, he's got good offensive instincts and a good hockey IQ.
Coghlan who is currently playing in the AHL is a ranging defenseman with good passing skills and offensive instincts he's put up 26 goals and 60 points in his last and has very good speed and passing instincts and can run a power play.
"We needed to move a goalie our of our system as the crease is crowded in the AHL, and honestly Igor is ready for the CPHL level, he's also handy with a scalpel and always seems to know where to find the freshest brains. He'll be missed"

Am I missing something?
An undrafted career AHLer and a 5th round pick in 2019 for a future elite goalie?

Shesterkin MIGHT be a top goalie, might not. Goalies are hard to define.

Based on feedback I received this offseason, I overpaid like crazy for Carter Hart, and Kahkonen had no value attributed to him in a deal for Boeser.
So this seems about right based on what I've experienced.
As an aside, Hart has like a .950 SV% thus far....just sayin

Agree with this. However, right now, he is trending in the right direction and this seems like an absolute steal of a deal.

Even if he isn’t this is still bad value
Shesterkin has had great stats in the 3 best leagues in the world. He’s proven himself against men before. There is a very high chance he’s a top goalie

Goalies are a funny thing
You can't give them away but if you want him... you have mortgage the farm
They only have value if you're seeking out a specific goalie, but if you're willing to call RENT-A-GOALIE then it's free labour for your farm

The bottom line for me, is I have Demko and a bunch of other goalies in the barn.
I've seen Focht play a bunch of times and I've liked him when I've seen him play, so I rolled the dice. Coghlan when I did some digging on him has good offensive attributes and has done decently in the AHL in two years, though he had a drop this year he still had good offensive stats. I have a shortage of scoring prospects as well.
So yeah its a roll of the dice.
the 750k for next year helps me, I have a load of RFA's coming up next year

When I saw the trade, I thought 'this guy watches Hitmen games'. And to be honest, I do put quite a bit of stock in what your own eyes tell you. The trick is whether other people in the various leagues (coaches and GMs) see it as well, and give the kid the opportunity to play.
An example of a bad way that it could go, is Jake Bean still languishing in the AHL, when he should have had more than a cup of coffee by now. A good example, on the other hand is Braden Point, those who saw him play new he was a star, but the numbers didn't say that on their own.

Sure, but that's the way of the world with every prospect. I don't disagree with you.
I'm ok with the trade.

I missed this thread but saw it in the minor trades thread. Yeah this is one of the more lopsided deals in some time.
New GMs please remember to post to the block.
I would have easily beaten this including by offering a 1st round pick.

Obviously I prefer the deal from my end. But it isn't like Igor is a 24 year old hot shot. The guy played 12 games in the NHL this year and is already 24. Matt Murray, 2 time Cup champ was available for a 2nd rd pick and yes he is only 26. The Avs starting goalie Philip Grubauer had almost no market. The goalie market is not the same as other positions. I added 2 starter rated goalies for reasonable prices during UFA. I am happy to add Igor and given some of the comments above will probably try to flip him in the near future.
Now on to some of the comments. I hate when guys say I would have offered more. If you take the time to message GMs asking about certain players you will find more trade opportunities. I get probably 1 PM a month asking about a player (ignoring the messages from Scorp). I think GMs should be encouraged to be active and actually message around for trades. But emphasizing posting a trade block for a goalie with 12 career games who might not even be the #1 in NY next year? I get it when posting a star like McDavid or Pastrnak or whatever but you don't need to do that for every medium value asset you're thinking of trading.

I think you are underselling the player. I think it is about new GMs understanding some best practices to maximize value, which as a regular course of action includes one, or both of, seeking opinions or others or posting on the block - particularly when the value of the player is a little unknown.
It's a 100% steal. It's OK. We all do it.
I'll give you a first for him right now if you want.

I have no problem winning a deal. I like the suggestion for new GMs to ask for advice but I do not think they need to post average assets on the trade block before making a deal. The main purpose of my post was responding to the better offers and trade block comments. I think if GMs were more active and took the time to search out deals it would be better for the league and also provide more opportunities for GMs to get players they clearly like.
We can talk trade via PM.

5 Games instead of 12. And AHL Rookie of the year. Both names are hard to spell. Can't be that much different
