This is the same thing everyone said after Cooke sliced his achilles and he's recovered to have some of the best seasons of any modern defenseman. You can never go wrong paying star players what they deserve, as long as you have a GM capable enough to surround them with solid depth.
With all the smoke, it seems like Karlsson will probably move on, but I can't even imagine the price.

Treliving has shown he will pay a high price for what he wants.

A fair price.
As in, not giving up the massive initial ask, and being patient instead of getting bent over.

This is why I cringe when I hear fans here pine for Edwards to sell the team. Things could be so, so much worse than an ownership group that stays out of the media in regards to team stories (arena stories are a different thing), has no issues spending to the salary cap ceiling and retaining their star players.

I can't see Treliving paying the price for renting Kane. I think he only trades for a guy like that if they have at the very least solid ground work for an extension in place.

Deep down I hope it's not the obvious choice of Kane, but that they are trying to somehow snag O'Reilly with some salary retained. I haven't run the numbers but if the cap goes up as much as they say, adding him and extending Backlund would be possible I think, and holy crap what a group that would be up front with the added bonus of having some centers on the wing for depth.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - O'Reilly

if the Flames acquired O'Reilly I'd have him take faceoffs on the first line at the very least, maybe even move Monahan over to free up his offense some more

I suspect Fox's value will be at an all time high when he tears up the WJC. That could work in our favor.

I just don’t see how the Flames can afford what it will cost to keep Kane unless they convince Brouwer to waive or move a valuable guy in Frolik.
Backlund needs money this summer and Tkachuk, Bennett, Ferland, starting goalie next summer

If hathaway keeps producing then a rw isnt need in the top 9.

Interesting on RoR he could be a target for sure. Doesn’t make a ton of sense unless the Flames are ready to move on from Backlund due to his contract ask? It was interesting to hear the Flames were in on Kyle Turris considering they have 2 really good centre’s and a solid rookie on the third line.

I'd be willing to move Hamilton for O'Reilly if defence is what Sabres are looking for. I'd then move Hamonic up to play with Gio, Stone with Brodie, and bring up Andersson.

I bet Brouwer gets bought out this off season. $1.5 million cap hit for 4 years.
Hopefully he plays well enough to get traded, maybe with some salary retained.

Great story, and hopefully he does. Not very likely though.

Hathaway is looking like the perfect 10th forward.
Hungry to move up, recognizing he still has to earn his spot. Able to hump up a line for a shift or two after a PK or PP. Really like him in that role.
I think he bumps Stajan out of the lineup, although i'd prefer Brouwer to be sent packing instead.

Well fair is always in the eye of the beholder. Seems like he gets the players he targets, and a common way to do that is to outbid other interested teams.
It’s not a criticism. If there is a Sabre he really thinks will make the team better I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot going back the other way.
