Default Athletic: Andersson = Good.

Quote:
“I didn’t really know about it till now,” Andersson said after the morning skate when asked about being a trade target in recent days. “I’m a young guy and if we want to swing for the fences, I’m not stupid — I know it’s me or Vali or Oliver (Kylington) that probably goes the other way. I understand the business.

“But I know that Calgary likes me. It’s always a good thing when your GM really likes you and doesn’t want to get rid of you. Brad wants to keep me here for a long time. That’s what I want, too.”

Some mature comments from Andersson - I like him more and more, over time.

I remember thinking at the 2015 draft that Treliving may have set up our D for years to come when he traded for Hamilton and then drafted Andersson and Kylington.

Well obviously he's since flipped Hamilton for Hanifin, and it's nice to see Andersson and Kylington both breaking into the league this year as well.

Add Valimaki to that and it's crazy how good and young our D is becoming.

It's sure more mature than this shot out of nowhere:

the fact that he traded the first 3 picks in that draft and still came away with 2 potential cornerstone defensemen in that draft is absolutely ridiculous.

love Raz. I'd have been livid if he had been traded.

While it was always assumed that we would leverage one of those young 3 d men into help elsewhere, I think its becoming somewhat clear that the best course of action now is to just keep them all. With Hanifin, this foursome can can be the core group for many years to come, and will be the ones replacing Gio, Brodie, Hamonic in due time.

Completely agree.

In fact I would move Brodie out this summer if it would help solidify either our forward ranks or goaltending.

Todd Cordell from HockeyBuzz has earned some congratulations. In 2015, he said Rasmus Andersson was a 1st round talent and that he would be really good. I believed him then and I believe him now. Todd Cordell is definitely one of my favourite Flames writers.

And Mangipane. This may rank as on if the flame best drafts of recent years.
Strange how it goes sometimes.

Andersson has been nothing short of awesome this season. I didn't know much about him before this season, other then what I read on CP. For a 2nd round D pick, to take the next step at the NHL level and excel is something else to watch.

I thought Valimaki had the better training camp and didn't think the Flames would roll with 2 rookie D. I'm sure glad they did. With Vali out, Andersson has been getting better each and every game. His points will come. And he's Swedish. Love me some Swedish players, especially Dmen. He' also got a bit of pest in him and likes to scrum it up.

He definitely has top 4 potential. God damn the Flames defence looks amazing now and for the future. 4 players all under 22, all of them excelling.

Andersson
Kylington
Valimaki
Hanifin

F'ing amazing! The team has a lot of lovable players this season, and Andersson is right up there.

Andersson is older than Hanifin.

No one talks about Noah, and I dont get it because he is the best of the bunch at this point and it isnt even close.

I suspect Valimaki the one guy that can surpass NH but for sure Rasmus is starting to look like a really good Dman with possible top line abilities.

Quickly becoming one of my favourite players on the team. Seems to improve every game, and despite being a smaller guy, always appears to be one of the first to get in a scrum to defend a teammate. Not many of those types of players around in this current generation.

I suppose it helps his maturity that he played with men at ages 15-16.

Great article by Scott. He's a true sportswriter.

He touched on one of the things I think that has not been mentioned enough about Andersson and Kylington.

Their long and deep relationship with Huska.

Their value is highest to Calgary because of the rapport and relationship he's built with them during their development. With his promotion, it's an ideal scenario for both of them. No one knows them better.

This isn't something that you can trade for. Now that Huska is up with the big club, you can't even really repeat it.

Ryan isn't developing defencemen in Stockton anymore.

These are the defencemen he has developed.

As a result, at this point in their careers, they have more intrinsic value here than anywhere else.

yeah, it's crazy when you think about it. Andersson and Kylington are only getting their feet wet at the NHL level, while Hanifin has already played over 300 games. Remarkable, really.

I really like Andersson. Becoming one of my favorite players.

But when you talk about keeping all of the young defensemen, you have to look at the LHD/RHD mix. Kylington, Valimaki, Hanifin and Giordano all shoot left. There are only three slots available.

Are you going to ask one of the young guys to switch sides?

Andersson was the 17th defenseman taken in the 2015 draft, and Kylington was 20th. Insane draft for Dmen.

You've got to give some props to Ryan Huska, who was known for developing defenseman when he was a coach in Junior (Kelowna?) And has produced 3 excellent young defenders out of Stockton.

I think he was a huge get. Outside of Brodie I can't recall the last time the Flames developed a defenseman, let alone 3 of the caliber we have now.
