My only advice is to make sure your personal affairs are in order before heading down there.....otherwise, there has got to be a good place or two in town to get a taco.....

I think the DF is relatively safe compared to the rest of Mexico no?

A co-worker of mine and her husband just got back last week and they loved it. They were staying with Mexican friends though, and her husband is Hispanic so that helped. Her husband told me that if you don't speak Spanish, there are many people that will try to take advantage of you. They loved it though... they said the food was better than anything they had.
Sorry, I don't have any advice other than just educating yourself on the dangers of large Latin America cities. I think if you're smart, there is no reason why you can't go and enjoy yourself.

Try not to breathe? From an architectural or history standpoint I think Mexico City would be an awesome place to visit, but it also has extremely poor air quality.

I will also say this though, spent a few days in Oaxaca before which is a fairly large Mexian city (4 million I think), and I felt safe the whole time. Other than one time a group of drinking teens were yelling at me to come over (not in a friendly way), but I just kept walking. Most of the people were so nice though and they didn't harass me to buy stuff like in Cancun.

Mexico City is both awesome and intimidating. Go see the old churches, you feel some presence when you go there (no I don't mean god or some ####).

I haven't been there, but many places in Mexico. I was quite fascinated with the Mayan temples and structures that are all around the city.

Mexico City was a huge surprise to me. A lot more cosmopolitan that I expected.
There are many good restaurants although I don't remember the name of any of them. Have some Tequila at one of these good restaurants. It comes in a glass you could mix a rum and coke in! I was told to order a Reposada from the extensive list of choices.
Take a drive through Zona Rosa. You may want to get out and walk around, maybe not. Just for the spectacle OMFG moment you will likely experience.
There was a Touristy square that was pretty cool. I don't remember the name.
As far as safety goes my only comment is the company that we did business with did not let us out of their sight for the three days we were there except to sleep. We were picked up at the airport, taken out for dinner, driven around and back to the hotel at 11:00 at night. Picked up at the hotel and taken to the office, taken for lunch, taken out for dinner immediately after work, taken for site seeing then back to the hotel at 11:00. Repeat each day. It was kind of weird. Definitely felt like they didn't want us getting into any kind of trouble.
It remains of the best places I've visited. Have fun

If you mean around Mexico City, that would be Aztec temples(or Olmec/Toltec, depending where you mean), the Mayan civilization was just eastern Mexico/Yucatan, and down into Central America. Mexico City is built directly on top & around the Aztec ancient capital city of Tenochtitlan. Would love to visit there, definitely on my bucket list.

Anthony Bourdain is there now, so it might be worth checking out his tweets to see if he mentions anything worthwhile. If not, I'd think the episode would air before too long, and he's always good for lots of eating options.
I haven't been to Mexico City, but I spent several months in another Latin American capital city this year and have spent lots of time in supposedly dangerous Mexican cities, and I've never had any problems. You'll hear horror stories and people will tell you it's dangerous, but you really should be fine as long as you don't go looking for trouble.

If you are gonna mix anything with Tequila, it better be with Fresca. Greatest mexican drink ever.

I spent a couple days in Mexico City in the fall and absolutely loved it. I stayed at the Hyatt in the Polanco area, I felt safe for the most part and it's a beautiful area. The local taxis aren't safe, if you need to go somewhere just make sure you get one of the taxis at a hotel somewhere. If you're a foodie, it's a great area with lots of five star restaurants, amazing wine and tequila, and some of the best food I've ever had. We also visited the pyramids at Teotihuacan with a private tour company, that's worth checking out too.

It's pretty good. (Well, I used to have mezcal and Fresca, but they don't taste that differently to me).

I'm actually in Mexico City right now for a wedding. It is an amazing city and a very pleasant surprise for many people who visit.
I'll post some more information and advice when I'm back next week.

good news for all of you foodies - there appear to be several Sbarro's stores located in Mexico City. You'll clearly never go hungry.....
