Joe Murphy living on the streets
Joe Murphy, former first overall pick by Detroit in 1986 is said to be living in a tent in Kenora, ON. He made over $15 million in his career. Sounds like he received some brutal concussions during his playing days. He won a cup with Edmonton in 1990.

TSN has a preview of their upcoming show "Finding Murph" on their website.

feel sorry for the guy; however, i will also not be starting a go-fund me page.
i thought NHL'rs received a various generous pension of something like $400,000 annually once they hit 400 games played plus the $15 million - wonder where all that went or if he sleeps in a tent because of mental health issues.

To get full unreduced yes. Reduced pension starts at 45.

There's two ends of the spectrum of homelessness: people who've had a bad run and need some support to get themselves together, and people with mental disorders that prevent them from being able to re-integrate. The process of getting a homeless person off the streets can take years just to overcome their distrust of the institutions set up to help them.

Very sorry to hear; it can be a quick fall and a long way back especially if there are mental health or substance issues. I am not suggesting either in this case, just noting that those items make it more difficult.

This is a tough watch, guy is pretty messed up.

Hard to prove that his problems were initially or purely caused by head injuries but it sure didn't help.

Really proud of Kidder for trying to help out. And he didn't even know the guy. Good on him.
Kind of sad it takes a video like that for people to want to reach out and help. Too bad the NHL and the PA didn't try a little harder years ago. Not that Murphy doesn't have a part in this situation, but clearly the guy badly needs help. Hope somehow he gets it.

From what I read he didn't seem to be a very popular figure in the dressing room. Might have burned some bridges which in turn made the NHL/NHLPA turn their backs on him. Still a sad story regardless of how he was in the room though.

Wow that was a tough watch. Stuff like this (and the Matt Johnson story last year) really gets to me. Murphy is a shell of his former self and I almost didn't believe that was him. Really hoping he gets the help that he needs. The parts with his daughter on camera killed me as it seems like he has completely abandoned all contact. Good on Trevor Kidd for reaching out--I didn't realize he was so involved with this type of thing.

And people on the Lindros thread were downplaying the effect of repeated concussions.

A really good article done by Oilernation. Provides some more information on the Joe Murphy story.

Watched the TSN story this morning, I do not know what to think. Certainly in my mind there were so many unasked questions that I all play a part in Joe Murphy's story. As mentioned earlier, where is his NHL pension? His sister, ex wife and daughter all say they are worried about him but what have they done to help him? Does Joe Murphy want a different life or is he quite happy and content living his life the way he is? And does he want help? And what kind of help?
I ask these questions as I myself am still trying to wrap my head around what depression, anxiety etc... truly are, not to mention to long term effects of prescription and recreational drugs. It also sounds like Joe Murphy has burned many bridges along the way and although that is neither here nor there when it comes to getting "help", it possibly explains why NHL alumni were not reaching out to him prior to this.

That was a tough watch, and a tough read on Oilernation.
I agree with a previous poster, the parts seeing his daughter, kill me. Mental illness is no joke.

Pretty clear there is some untreated mental illness there, unfortunately a very common trait among the no-fixed-address populace.

Joe Murphy, Red Wings' No. 1 pick, is homeless again — and refusing help
Efforts to get the No. 1 pick in the 1986 NHL draft off the streets have failed.
Murphy stayed in an extended-stay motel paid by the NHL Alumni Association for several months last winter but moved out, although he can’t offer a coherent reason. He spent time at a hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on the banks of Lake Superior, for a court-ordered mental-health evaluation. But he’s back in Kenora. He slept in a tent but he says it ripped. And now, he is back sleeping on benches, in doorways, inside a tunnel and under a gas station sign at the edge of this town of about 15,000, about 340 miles north of Minneapolis.

Correlation does not equal causation....
Not down playing the effects of concussions either, but to say that’s the cause of things is quite the leap. Considering all you likely know of this man and his life is likely from the couple minute videos linked I don’t think this is a conclusion you can jump too.

He had a long career with almost 800 games, why is his pension only $1000 a month?
