Agree they are unlikely to make a big splash for a permanent goaltender though.

I think the big hope is that Rittich's injury is the principal reason for why his first half was elite and his second half was pedestrian.

Goaltending has developed into an achilles heel for the Flames. I don't really care who solves the problem, but the revolving door in net just has to end.

What we saw this post-season was that great goaltending can come from the most unexpected places. Mike Smith absolutely left nothing to prove to Flames fans and deservedly left a disappointing round 1 with pride. Albeit I hope that post-season didn't earn him another year as I'd love to see Rittich given the opportunity. We owed the regular season largely to Rittich, so who knows what kind of magic we would have seen from him in the post-season.

We also saw in this post-season how far we have to go. We may not see a ton of fresh faces, as there was a lot left on the ice from a good amount in that locker room. How far they could have gone is the real question, because if you look at Boston, St. Louis, or Vegas... could we have beaten them with better goaltending?

Of course, I'm hoping that Lehner and Bob are in the mix but I just don't see how those two are happening. I really like the idea of Reimer, and I think that option makes a lot of sense here if he's squeezed out in Florida.

I also still have a ton of faith that Parsons is going to be a keeper. How long until he's NHL ready is up in the air after the last 2 seasons - but I'm hoping that long-term he will end up being the guy. So I'm not overly excited about getting something great locked up long-term just yet. I hope Tre doesn't sit on his hands waiting for it to come to fruition, but I could see a Rittich/Reimer duo being pretty solid in front of the team we saw in the regular season.

We definitely should have a lot of confidence in Big Save Dave right now.

Talbot's staying in Philly for sure. Will "mentor" teammate/close friend Hart and will reunite with AV who was his old coach in Manhattan.

I sense Smith being a proud & confident guy isn't going to be keen on signing a deal that pays him considerably less than the $5.6 million he earned last year which makes it tough to bring him back. He was good in the playoffs but at 37 years he's not likely to be any better next season and he certainly wasn't a $5 million goaltender last season.

I suspect that Smith is a realist, and given that he is likely not to command much on the open market above $2.0 m, he will most probably stay where he is settled in Calgary if they are interested in re-signing him. Will Smith reject a contract offer because of his wounded pride if there is nothing much better on the table? I doubt it.

I would be surprised, if he has a real desire to play again, that he wouldnt sign for 2.5-3 million a year.

Money likely isnt much motivation for him at this point in his career. More about fit, competitiveness of the team, and location. He is a big time family guy and im guessing they may be the single biggest factor in his decision.

I doubt very much that he will find a situation like what you describe. Smith is likely not going to find a playing situation in which he is getting even half the NHL starts. Who is in the market for a 37-year-old starting goalie who played in 42 games last year, and not because of injuries?

^ Agreed. But I don't think that will stop him from having a look or his agent making calls. Regardless of what GMs think of him, he clearly still feels he has it. It will be his gamble.

I just don't think we can afford to pay any of the top UFA goalies and that includes McElhinney. I think we need to be under $1.5m for the 1B/Backup spot. Tristan Jarry is who I would be looking at. Get a guy who has some upside, maybe find the next Jordan Binnington.
