That just ensures that the next time they have the chance they offer sheet you right back.

Like when Vancouver and St.Louis traded offer sheets that one off season.

I don't get why there is a segment of fans that are so convinced that offer sheets are a great tool.

They can be useful in limited situations, but on the whole they really are barely worth using.

how is he far better other than not being an oiler? just a personal eye-test sort of thing?

I haven't watched Morrissey play much, but from what I understand their stats are quite comparable.

Is Morrissey actually that much better? He plays on the better team but that doesn't necessarily make him a much better d-man.

Nurse: G- 6 P - 26 TOI: 22:15 +15
Morrissey: G- 7 P-26 TOI: 20:27 +15

Difference in TOI is 100% ES, PP and PK TOI is pretty equal.

Advanced stats seem similar too, with Nurse actually slightly ahead.

CF Rel %:
Morrisey: -0.40%
Nurse: 0.82%

HDCF Rel %:
Morrissey: 1.15%
Nurse: 2.4%

Off. Zone Start:
Morrissey: 49.4%
Nurse: 48.96%

So overall they are really close but Morrissey plays on a much better team.

Nurse's most common d-partner was Larsson - and he played 544 minutes with McDavid's line and 1004 without him.

Morrissey's most common d-partner was Trouba - and he played 500 minutes with the Wheeler line and 866 without him.

It was a bad year for the Oilers last year but Nurse actually took a pretty good step forward. I was really hoping somebody would overpay on an offer sheet for Nurse because I think they would have been screwed if they lost him on the back end for only a 1st and a 3rd.

Nurse had basically zero leverage, and still the best deal chia could come up with was “here take what’s left in my wallet”. You know the deal would have been 2x4 if chia had 4.7 in cap room.

I don't recall Colorado offer sheeting any of Calgary's RFAs in retaliation. . . . Or the Hawks retaliating against the Sharks for Hjalmarsson. . . . Or the Preds retaliating against the Flyers for Weber. . . . Or the Sabres retaliating against the Oilers for Vanek. . . . Or the Canucks retaliating against the Flyers for Kesler. . . . Or the Ducks retaliating against the Oilers for Penner. . . .

But I'm sure your memory is better than mine.

I think the only time retaliation happened was between Vancouver and St.Louis but also pretty stupid of the Canucks to use an offer sheet when they still had their own RFA in the same season.

Quote:
Over a seven-day span from July 1 to July 8, 2008, the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues front offices fired shots back and forth. It was the Canucks who fired first, however.

With David Backes’ contract with St. Louis over and free agency looming, the Canucks attempted to swing a deal for him. The trade fell flat and, subsequently, Vancouver offered Backes a 3-year, $7.5 million deal that was answered in hours by St. Louis.

Blues president of hockey operations at the time, John Davidson, told the Vancouver Province that the initial trade offer was akin to giving up, “a Volkswagen for a Porsche.” Clearly displeased with the Canucks’ attempts to acquire Backes, St. Louis shot back with an offer sheet of their own: a one-year, $2.5 million deal for Steve Bernier, who the Canucks had acquired from the Sabres four days prior.

You really need to find more worthwhile things to get worked up about.

You're right. It doesn't ensure that another team will offer sheet you back. It certainly makes it more likely if they have an opportunity to do so IMO.

I think it also has the potential to hurt your reputation among some GMs that don't like offer sheets which may effect future transactions.

Those are a lot of offer sheets you mentioned. Which of those offer sheets greatly benefited the team making the offer sheet?

I would say none. I haven't seen an offer sheet made post lockout that was a big success for the team making the offer sheet.

So if an offer sheet doesn't give you much chance of success, is it worth it to use it to help drive up RFA salaries which
affect your own team as well?

No, you're just thinking that way because of how many times and how much the Oilers hurt their reputation through blunders and stupidity, including offer sheets.

It's a body of work with your team, mostly heightened by Kevin Lowe's inadequacy, butthurt retaliation and public outbursts.

I was hoping for more. This is actually a fair contract for the Oilers. Kind of disappointed it didn't go full Chia.

I'd much rather pay Darnell Nurse 3.2M over the next two years than Michael Stone.
