This. This is a good contract for him. 4.5m was a very, very bad contract.

I’m not at all surprised he got another opportunity, and I think we all would’ve been happy with him at this price (given the lower expectations and, accordingly, the lower usage).

Troy Brouwer's one-year deal with the #FlaPanthers will pay him $850,000. It's a one-way contract.

I don't agree, actually.

I would've said that after year 1, but not after year 2. He's below replacement level IMO, and his inability to do things necessary on a 4th line makes him a less than ideal candidate for that role. I'm not talking about fighting or blocking shots, I'm talking about puck pressure, skating, and effort.

Maybe he can find his game in a different system, but removing him from the Flames' lineup was addition by subtraction.

This. As time went on I noticed more and more that he was becoming an offensive vacuum. It wasn't just that he had no offensive ability like say Hathaway. He had a negative impact on anyone forced to play with him. He also continued to make more and more mistakes defensively. Wouldn't want him if he GAVE the Flames 850k in cap space.

Rare is the day I agree with Flash, but in this case, I do. Brouwer was below replacement value. Even on an $850k contract, he needs to improve his performance to justify his place in an NHL line-up.

At least with that contract he can be a regular scratch without the bad optics of scratching a highly paid player.

Troy is a net negative player.

He makes literally everyone around him worse.

Why would anyone pay someone to make their team worse?

It’s illogical.

This is the worst signing of the off-season.

he wasn't run out of town by the Sun. all they did was throw dirt on his grave while forgetting he wasn't dead yet.

Brouwer said he sees a lot of similarities between the 2010 Blackhawks and this year's Panthers. But instead of older guys like John Madden coming him to help him, he's now become the older guy. Excited to help Florida's young stars.

A more honest quote would be him seeing similarities between the team and a boat listing dangerously close to the rocks and how he can act as a giant ####ing anchor for them.

Glad he was able to land somewhere; the timing of his buyout wasn't ideal for an older guy looking for another opportunity.

I'm happy he's no longer here, but wish him all the best. Hopefully he can show that Calgary just wasn't the best fit.

^I like the comments about the team, but they ring pretty hollow in my ears. Especially the part where his numbers don't reflect the player he is. I call B.S. on that one.

I would rather guys like Hathaway, Foo etc. compete for this role than handing a contract to a declining veteran.

Interesting.

Is this Brouwer's way of suggesting that he was mishandled in Calgary? Or is this his round-about way of saying that he badly underperformed?

He's never taken accountability for his poor performance, not publicly anyways. I would almost guarantee that he blames the Gulutzan coaching system. It certainly wasn't for lack of icetime or PP opportunities.

I had the same question. Hard to imagine him believing he wasn't given enough opportunity here.

I personally think that Brouwer is a better player than Hathaway.

So, this is where the first narrative falls apart for me as well. Also add to that his comments at the end of the 2017 season in which he gave himself a passing grade, and it would seem like a fairly striking turn-of face to be taking a higher level of accountability now.

Brouwer sucks. I thought the panthers were trying to be better this year in their management...

Brouwer was not misused in Calgary, he wasn't skilled enough to produce, and not physical, fast or an engaging leader type to carve out a role player spot successfully.

I wouldn't be shocked if he's healthy scratched numerous times this year.
