Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Sort of related: I do hope the Flames take a chance on Rieder for cheap. I don't expect a huge bounce back but I do think a return to the norm would be expected (and probably for a million or so).

Gustav Nyquist still sorting through teams, half of a dozen clubs in the mix including the #Canucks.

He has a chance to do something with the opportunity handed to Tobias Rieder, Ryan Spooner, Drake Caggiula, Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto and others last season. It won’t be difficult to accomplish more than they did, but the Oilers will be hoping for much more, not 0 to ten goals but 15 to 20."

This is glorious. No wonder he chose Edmonton over Calgary though. There, he steps immediately into a top 6 nhl spot. Here, he is fighting dube and mangiapane for the 4th line lw position, two guys who put up over a ppg in the AHL, a much better league.
Edmonton's roster is so unbelievably weak and yet they are a cap team.

Apparently Joe Pavelski is currently meeting with Julien BriseBois in Tampa.

With rumors he's open to a discount for the chance to win. He would be a great short term option to shore up the centre depth.
Monahan/Pavelski/Backlund would be pretty nice.
Tampa makes sense as a chance to win. But on that criteria alone, if Dallas is in the mix, surely Calgary is. But I bet he has no desire to play here.
Dump Brodie and Frolik. Sign Tkachuk to 6 x 7.5.
Sign Pavelski to 3 x 4.85
Profit.
For the record, I couldn't be bothered to look up if those numbers even work.
|
The one number that has zero chance of working is Pavelski for under $5M per. He is getting $7M+ coming off 38 goals.

Is Pavelski for sure done with the SJS?... or is he likely to re-sign there?

Not sure. But at least he is checking things out and making an informed decision.
Tough really, I think SJ is betting hes going to take a hefty pay cut to stay.

They're in a big cap squeeze.
$14M of space with a 15 man roster. Labanc and Meier for big name RFAs, Pavelski, Thornton, Nyquist, and Donskoi the big name UFAs.
Plus all the talk of Marleau returning if he gets bought out. Though it's possible after the buyout he'd take league min or a $1M contract possibly since SJ is his preferred destination.

I assume Pavelski is their top priority amongst the UFAs, for sure, maybe even more so than the RFAs (not sure about that).

Pure speculation on my part but I fully expect Ottawa to be inquiring on some aging veterans who are declining but are bigger names... I think they'll be interested in Spezza, Vanek, Methot, etc. Probably won't cost much but will probably get more money from Ottawa than from anywhere else. Besides Ottawa is super young and could use some veteran presences. Melnyk will probably want to sell some jerseys with recognizable names

Staples is next-level bad. He doesn’t do actual sports reporting; he chimes in with his inane Oilers homeristic opinions on his Journal hockey blog. His hockey blogging is actually better than his city columns for the Journal. How a hack of his ilk survives all the cuts and buyouts at the Journal is beyond me. I’ll never forget this gem about walking being the new public transit, like he was on to something revolutionary:
“It’s almost quaint to walk to work. It’s definitely something from another time. But I’ve also had those moments of bliss walking, something I never got on the cramped train or stop-and-go commute.”

What do we think of the idea of the Flames adding Brandon Pirri on a cheap deal?

He can score goals if put with a decent playmaker and given good ice time, otherwise he brings nothing to the table.
