How did the Hamilton trade not work? They got a 22 year old top pairing Dman for the 15th pick and a couple of 2nds and then in 3 years turned Hamilton and other assets into 2 former 5th overall picks? Are you just talking about the following season? The Hamilton trade was a long term deal trading for a 22 year old.

The Miller and Hamonic trades are far more comparable but at least the Flames made it after their second playoff appearance in 3 years not after 4 bottom 10 finishes in 5 years.

You can easily see the thinking though. The Flames had come off a good year standings wise even with mediocre goaltending, and the addition was supposed to make them better. I suspect the odds of them missing the POs were set pretty low at that point in time. And even if they missed Treliving would have been justified in thinking the odds of "winning" the lottery would be low (which they were).

Plus, just like this year where we laughed at the Oilers for winning the game against Calgary that "lost" the lottery, that doesn't actually play out from a logic standpoint.

"Very much like the Hamonic trade" only in terms of the return, but the Canucks are no where close to where the Flames were when they made that deal. This is really premature.

Miller is probably going to put up 60+ points if he sticks with Pettersen and Boeser.
