Thanks for the poll, but as structured, there is no context. There needs to be a yes/no choice for each player.
As is, MacInnes for example has 15 votes, but what does that mean? With a yes/no, if he has 15 yes and 50 no, that is a different piece of information than 15 yes and 5 no

I mean, you can see the number of people who voted at the bottom of the poll. As of right now, 17 out of the 40 people who voted believe his jersey should be retired.

I would not vote for a certain player despite his lifetime accomplishments and achievements because he votes for a different political party than me. Am I doing it right?

To my own surprise I voted no one. If Gio had finished here I would have said yes, but the lack of team accomplishment hurts him a lot.
Similarly I can find reasons why I'm a no on each.
Kipper is the closest to me, if the man can be found and convinced to come.

Yes, and that's fair. But I was thinking more about actual 'no's, as in, 'I am against this person getting their number retired'

Not at all. Some of the non-political stuff he has said over the years is what would hold him back. The nutjob conspiracy stuff seems fairly recent, after him already having a slim chance of his number being retired.

It is not about political values, it is about being an ambassador for the team. The Flames are as non partisan as possible, with exception to inclusivity campaigns, and recognition of current tragedies. It would make zero sense for them to endorse Theo who is increasingly known for his participation in political discourse. It would be nothing but a PR nightmare.

Speak for yourselves.
No way I want kipper to have his number retired and it’s because of who he voted for in the most recent Finnish election.

Theo should’ve already been retired. Too many red flags. But his play deserves it. Kipper next. Macinnis and Neuiwendyk should’ve been already instead of the forever a flame. Gio is a maybe for me.

I'd like to see the bar set really high, it should really mean something. My criteria would be:
- Exceptional achievement as a Flame
- Long tenure
- Mostly remembered for his time as a Flame
- Remained on good terms
Gio is a maybe - going from undrafted to Norris-winner is a pretty big achievement, he spent most of his career here, and it wasn't his decision to leave.
I can see an argument for Kipper - high level of peak success, though his tenure wasn't super-long.
The rest I don't think should be retired, MacInnis is the only one close.

Powerplay Quarterback

If you score the most goals in a season in franchise history, then captain the team to 2 finals in 3 years, and win a cup, your number gets retired. If you are the best goalie in franchise history to that point, and also go to the finals twice in 3 years, winning once as arguably the MVP, again, no brainer.
If you are arguably the best player in the league and captain your team to within a goal of the Stanley Cup, and are an even better person throughout, you deserve it.
Kipper comes close. Nobody else does.

Also - how do sad sack franchises like Stl and Buf have so many retired numbers?

I have zero memory of Vernon retiring as a Flame. Had totally forgotten that.
Never realized that he was a Calgary native either. Makes me wonder what it would be like to put together a roster of the best ever Calgary-born NHLers. At least it would have a HOF goalie.

I’d say yes to Gio and Kipper. I could probably be persuaded on MacInnis.
The rest? Nah. A big hell no to Gaudreau.

Don't forget the only goalie to beat the Gretzky Oilers in the playoffs when they were champions

Johnny would have been a "day one" jersey retirement had he stayed.

Sadly, not too many actual Calgary born NHLers even if you include nearby towns. Makar makes the team. But after him, Hall, Point, Unger etc you’re looking at Colbornes, Raymond’s, Gagliardis

Kipper is easy just because 34 is an unusual number.
