Default Re-living the Stanley Cup - Historic Treasures by bobbylouie

So some friends of mine are playing/streaming an old NCAA tournament (from a year most people don’t remember) to still fill out their brackets. Pretty cool idea to keep something going.

Was wondering if there is anyway we could have game nights from 1989? Does this exist out there, would this even be possible?

Know you guys are way smarter than I, so thought I’d send out a seed thought. I was too young in 1989 to really have appreciated it, would be fun to follow with others. (Game every other night?) Game Thread and all??

Who’s with me!

I like it. Throw in 1986 game nights as well for the prequel. Those two playoff years are so intertwined.

Not sure if this really fits the bill, and it wouldn't work for a real time thread with commentary (since it isn't video), but I do have in-depth full game reports for every game of the 1988-89 season in this format that includes lots of tidbits that might not be familiar to fans, especially if you weren't born yet.

The game 1 report is extra long (it's the only one for the entire season on 2 pages) since it includes off-season info, with some interesting notes about Vernon, Macoun, Gilmour, Fleury and others, McDonald starting on the 4th line, and how the roster was formulated.

It was created in real-time back in 1988, with some additional info added in the interim for historical perspective.

Like I said, it's not exactly what the OP asked for, but if there's any interest, let me know.

Also, I'm not a prolific poster, so my apologies in advance if I screwed up the tech part of this. I suppose I'll see myself in a few minutes.

Sounds like you're about to be!

I'd try to upload the pictures at https://imgbb.com/ then try posting them from the imgbb site.

Can't wait to read those!

ok, trying to embed again from imgbb

If the embed doesn't work (I don't see them in the preview screen even though they appear as text in my typed reply),
here is the direct link to the info (if you're allowed to do direct links here
so people can at least see if it's worth something)

Looks like some people are seeing it, so a couple of things off the top for clarity:

At the time, the NHL was playing 5-minute overtimes with regulation 5-on-5
skaters, with the game finishing as tied if nobody scored in the overtime. Thus,
the 4 periods shown in the scoring totals, and shots on goal.

Also, the apparent discrepancy with the note about Jiri Hrdina's goal although it
doesn't show in the boxscore --- the goal was changed on Friday to Al MacInnis
when Hrdina said he never tipped MacInnis' shot. The boxscore was updated at a
later time, while the narrative note created post-game in real time remains.

Awesome! Really cool stuff. The game notes are most interesting to me. I had to look up that Steve Smith as I had zero memory of him as a player let alone a Flame. He must have been strictly pre-season then lost on waivers. Can I ask how you came across these? Do you have multiple seasons as well?

Yeah, this guy is a "secondary" Steve Smith who was a 1st round pick for Philadelphia in 1981 and played only 18 games over 6 seasons, NOT the legendary Steve Smith of Edmonton-Calgary lore.

If somebody could privately send me (or just post it here) a screenshot of what a proper "reply to thread" looks like with a photo embedded, that might be helpful since it seems like this would be more effective if I could just post the info directly to the thread rather than link it.

"Flames start the season healthy with the exception of back-up goalie Rick Wamsley, still recovering from lingering effects of the flu"

Back in those days, the flu would take you down to a day or two... and generally, you'd have to be pretty careless to contract if from them

...the good 'ol days...

Again, cannot emphasize how much I enjoy seeing things like this. For the longest time it felt (and sometimes still does) hockey was so far behind the times from a historical archive perspective. Sites like Hockey-Reference and Nhl.com have come leaps and bounds sharing historic boxscores and game logs. I still think we have a long way to go as a site like baseball reference is the end-all be-all to baseball stats as the data they've acquired has so many layers.

Would love if a site like Hockey-Reference somehow acquired data from someone like the Hockey News and could post summary recaps and game notes (like what you've posted for those first two 88-89 games). I get that is a huge undertaking but I feel like would be such a valuable tool from an Archival perspective and is incredibly important.

Game 2 coming at 3 p.m. Thursday. Now see that my account is set for "you may NOT post attachments", so I'll do the link thing again, but if somebody can tell me how to change that, I still think it would better if I could embed the info right here so it appears within the post.
