There is zero doubt Phillips is a better option than Coleman. So he is the guy I would target. Maybe Rooney could be waived too.

Then if you must you put Phillips where Dube is and slide Dube to fill Coleman’s spot.

Also wasn’t Sutter the one who came in and said this is merit based? No one is entitled to play in the NHL?

Wow- sure doesn’t look like it.
Yesterday I made a comment that a certain post was the worst I’ve seen.

I take that back now.

I remember when we were in abbotsford and stockton wishing we had a top performing producer or two in that league to pluck when we needed an injection of skill, but mostly had guys with average or below average stats who were actually good bets to not convert to much at the nhl level

now we have the runaway leader , another top 10 producer and the two guys running the show here are pretending like they don't exist

apparently training camp in september (where every player is still getting up to speed) is where our team draws its line in the sand

Josh Leivo was an AHL playoff beast and then you have Andrew Poturalski who has been dominant in the AHL for the last few years. But they couldn’t cut it in the NHL.

still don't think that's the case with phillips . he has the mitts to make things happen in tight, and we could really use that here

I'd say you have about 10% and 5% chance of those being true.

On Sutter's ability to be stubborn for sure.

As a coach and human being? No ... he's just cantankerous. Read enough about his son and his family etc and you know he's not a bad human being.

Years ago when I was in the dressing room for media scrums with CP I couldn't get over how different he was when the cameras weren't turned on.

Or ...

they're waiting for an opportunity with injury like most NHL teams.

You don't have to like Coleman one iota to push back on your over the top comments.

Phillips not getting a shot is very disappointing, yes.

But can we cut it out with all the "fire Sutter" bullcrap? He may not be perfect, but he's a big upgrade over just about any coach this team has ever had.

I have no interest in going back to the Ward/GG era or anything similar.

It's almost like the guys in charge of the NHL team know just how few small players have an impact at the NHL level, let alone what would be the smallest player in modern history. Sace the garbage listings from the AHL website on size, eyes will tell you that Phillips is way smaller than Pelletier, who is borderline for size in the NHL. Flames drafting has been atrocious because they continue to pick guys with no hope of playing the NHL simply because of their size.

When the Flames only drafted Big Boys from the WHL in the 2000s, their drafting was even worse.

Maybe....personally I think he is coaching this version of the Calgary Flames into a box.

Cole Caufield is the same size as Matthew Phillips. Matty is actually listed as 5'8" where Caufield is 5'7". - 5'8" contributing guys include DeBrincat, Zuccarello, Atkinson

What is Phillips' actual weight. Every source I look at has him at 140, is that actually it?

If so that's what makes him different from almost every short NHL player.
The guys you list are all 170+
I don't know if there's a payer in the NHL currently who is <160 pounds.

Even Rocco Grimaldi (who is a guy I've wondered if is a comparable for MP) is 180.

So a guy of his physical stature exceling in the NHL would be very unusual.

And I say all that while still agreeing that I think he should be called up. But his size (and not just height) is still the primary reason why he likely wouldn't have success.

Again this is all based on an assumption 140 is an accurate weight. If it isn't, and he's closer to 170, then I take all that back.

No he's not the same size. He's 20-30 pounds heavier (again unless the status on MP are incorrect).

Phillips is 5'8" 160 https://theahl.com/stats/player/6729...tthew-phillips

5'7" 140 is his combine measurement from more than six years ago.

I've interacted with both Phillips and Pelletier regularly ... the height difference between the two is not significant.
