That seems weird, cause the major canadian artists now a days typically mention they're Canadian quite often in interviews and TV analysts speaking about them will often introduce them as Canadian or mention it at some point.
I have a hard time believibf people across the world have never heard mention of Drake, Bieber, The Weeknd, Sean Mendes, Alessia Cara being Canadian.
Most people just watch movies and listen to music. I didn't previously know The Weeknd is Canadian. Their big fans will know, but not your average person.
Don't think it happens as much to Brits though as they have more distinctive accents and the UK has a stronger cultural presence of its own.

I suppose I should of said "nobody outside of Canada cares about an artist coming from Canada." I did miss on Drake, but all those other examples I doubt few people outside of Canada actually know are Canadian. Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, and Biebs are known as Canadian outside of Canada. But that is really about it, unless everyone I spoke to over four months in England and Germany last winter were a statistical anomaly so big I should sell my kidneys for lottery tickets.

I think it's cool that we have the artists that are truly "ours". It's too bad for them that their audience didn't expand, but I like that we support our home-grown talent the way we do. Canadian music is awesome and I wish the world got more into the "Canadiana" versions of it (Hip, Sam Roberts, Arkells, etc..) moreso than our pop-stars. But I do like that we have it as our own and its high quality stuff that we can enjoy.
I'm sure most countries have these types of acts that most of us will never hear.

A lot of people just generally don't much care which country an artist comes from unless it's somehow relevant to their image or music. This isn't specific to Canada, and while people are likely to guess that an artist is likely from the US rather than Canada if you ask them, that's just because that's way more likely.
On a general level I would however say that yes, people are quite aware that plenty of good music comes out of Canada. Sure they might have a hard time naming them specifically, but most people also have a hard time naming Swedish acts, even though everyone knows Sweden is a big music exporter. Just generally speaking, people don't know where most of their music comes from.
From the point of view of fans, where an artist is from is mostly relevant in that it affects 1) how easy it is to see them live, 2) where are they most likely to appear on TV 3) when do they post on social media. So whether an artist being from Canada rather than the US is kind of irrelevant, while an artist being from Europe and not America is relevant.
Steve Hofstetter is one of my favourite comedians, found him by his heckler videos on YouTube, saw him in Toronto live, actually he changed his venue for the show because of a Facebook message I sent him (found out that the location he previously booked was closing and would be closed the date of his show).
He flimed his last special at the high school he graduated from. A bit of Canadian jokes (well Air Canada jokes).
He's a hell of a good guy, and I find him hilariously funny.
If you've got an hour (yes yes, it's a full special) enjoy:
