Cooper says having the regular season they had is a blessing and a curse. Said that being so far in front they hadn't played a meaningful game in months and couldn't amp it up. Says that's not an excuse but the reality. It is true as I feel that there's not a magic switch where teams can just coast and then be ready to face a team that's been playing intense hockey for weeks. There's just too much parity now that any team playing their best hockey can beat an elite team that's not giving 100%.

Haha! Suck it, Tampa! Nothing pleases me more than to see them get knocked out, and in such embarrassing fashion too. It's wonderful.
Just watched John Cooper's post game comments, and the guy looked completely shell-shocked. Like he just can't believe what happened to his team in that series. I fear we might be seeing a similar press conference with Peters if the Flames can't find a way to turn their fortunes around.

Two years ago Western Conference Champion Chicago lost 4 straight to WC2 Nashville in the first round. Nashville lost in the SC finals.
Parity and poop happens.

Do you remember that Reggie Dunlop?

a Bruins team that featured a 19 year old Milt Schmidt and a 35 year old Eddie Shore!
mind you I'm not really sure how the playoffs worked that year, the Bruins and Leafs were the 2 division winners and played in round 1. the Leafs swept the best of 3 , winning 2 in overtime

Hey, remember when Tampa was upon 3-0 on Columbus after the first period of game 1? It's not like they stumbled out of the gate or anything.
11 periods of hockey later...

Why would anyone put money on Tampa after the 2nd game? The odds were terrible still as Tampa was the clear favourite in games 3 and 4.

Shocking defeat. Columbus could turn this into a cup final run as they have to believe they can beat anyone.

It's just kind of ironic to me that the Flames were designed for 5+ seasons to just squeak into the playoffs as a 7th or 8th seed and hopefully catch fire and go deep like we did in 2004. As many times as we finished in one of those seeds, the team looked listless in the first round.
Now that we have had the 2nd best regular season in the team's history and finish 1st in the conference, the top seeds in the NHL have never looked worse, including the Flames.
It really is frustrating being a hockey fan sometimes.

Ha ha ha that's so true as Darryl Sutter the GM basically ran the team based on doing whatever it takes to make at least the 8th seed in hopes anything can happen. Now you put it that way it really does feel a little hopeless at times being a Flames fan. I suppose timing is everything sometimes.

The best team Flames have ever had were extremely fortunate to beat the lowly Canucks in overtime, Game 7 , first round.
It’s all about overcoming adversity.

They had a historic season, and a historic 1st round loss. Couldn't happen to a better bunch. F*** Tampa. Won a cup they didn't deserve, didn't get a sniff at one they did. Hockey gods are smiling today.

This is probably the craziest, least expected thing I've ever seen in hockey. Wow. Columbus has gotta feel like they can win it all now.

One has to wonder now if they have a letdown especially if the Bruins/Leafs series goes deep and they get an extended layoff. Also it could be their Stanley Cup feeling of achievement getting over that mountain of winning a round and they lose a big of that hunger in the next round.

I didn’t see the Blue Jackets advancing as historic upset as I had the Lightning winning in 7 - the Blue Jackets were a terrible matchup for them - but I never would have imagined the Lightning getting swept. What an amazing job by everyone in Columbus and what a special night for their fans.

To lose a series is one thing. To get swept by the 8th seed is down right embarrassing.

Columbus might have just become a favourite to win.
