I guess it comes down to whether you factor in not having picked until the fourth round into the equation, as Commandant has done here
Quote:
The Flames didnít draft until the 4th round and only had five picks overall. This causes their grade to suffer dramatically.
At least he thinks well of the trade!

If we included trades, the Flames would move up several notches for a draft day steal from the Hurricanes.

He grades on how well a team uses the picks that they have. I grade on the overall amount of talent added. Thats the difference.

I think grading on how well you use picks is dumb. You can make great 7th round picks who turn out to make the NHL and play 50 games as a fourth line. Based on the fact most 7th rounders never get that far, its a great pick. But it doesn't really mean much when we talk about how much better your hockey team is as a result of the pick. The guys who move the needle are the ones who can make an impact at the top 6 fwds, top 4 D, number 1 goalie, etc...

so total talent added is better than using picks well IMO

But total talent is largely driven by number of picks and where those picks are, things that largely happen in advance of the draft
Therefore you could have basically written ahead of time who had a good draft

Sure it is

Free agency is largely driven by the amount of money a team has and the amount of cap space they have.

Do some teams have advantages before the draft even starts? of course. No one said that life was fair

And the teams with extra picks? they got those picks for a reason. Their GMs focused on adding draft picks. Of course they are in better position to have a good draft, that has been part of their strategy (usually cause they are rebuilding).

What I find most important about this, is how much you used the draft to improve your team's future. And yes the teams with higher picks (if used well) will have done a better job of improving their future.
