I agree that the impact to the Flames shouldn't be too much as Valimaki wasn't likely to play top 4 minutes, but the impact to his development is something to be concerned about. He'll have played roughly 40ish games in two years if he is out this year until April-ish. The most important factor for prospects is ice time and he will have had very little with his last two injuries.

Dude is okay, able to eat minutes I guess, but they aren't good minutes. Seems to me you're better off having internal solutions take on a bigger role in the short term. An injury to Valimaki surely isn't going to sewer them, they should manage.

As in having no money to spend and replacing Valimaki with Phaneuf would be like going from poor to po’?

Phaneuf on a PTO?
I would do it...why not. Its not like the Flames will ask him to play top minutes

I imagine that they value the locker room presence of a veteran 6-7th D more than most roster positions. I’m not sure what Phaneuf is like in a dressing room these days, but that would potentially be the ‘downside’. Prout seemed like the perfect kind of person for that role

I would PTO Phaneuf. But would Dion go for a PTO, or does he believe he's above that?
Flames-era Phaneuf and Boston-era Lucic incoming? Jk.

We have Kylington who filled in seamlessly for half of last season yet people are suggesting Phaneuf who was so bad the Kings didn't even want him?

The GM himself suggested adding depth on D...its August and the Flames already have a major injury

He did. May as well see if Grossmann is available too.
Phaneuf should be the last choice. That he seems to be some people's first choice just surprises me given we have all seen his recent body of work.

I agree with most that the Valimaki injury in itself isn’t a devastating hit to the team. The problem is that it’s almost an entire season long recovery...during which there are inevitably other injuries. We currently have 6 NHL caliber defencemen, assuming Anderson and Kylington don’t take a step backwards, but there’s a huge drop after that.
Unfortunately waiting for the Tkachuk situation to sort itself out might handicap them during training camp PTOs. The potential for one-way deals is key for those type of borderline NHL vets.

Its too bad they couldn't have found a way to hold onto the guy they gave up a 4th round pick for last spring. Fantenberg cost the Canucks less than $900k and he was just fine here in that 5/6D role

Dion was a good player in a fairly limited role with the Sens...Everyone sucked in LA even Doughty.
Of all the guys you could PTO/league min. right now Dion has the most upside IMO

No chance the Flames even consider Phaneuf. David Schlemko perhaps.

Well the Flames did make a 1st round pick and James Neal is no longer on the team but yeah overall this off season has been very frustrating.
