I don't get this. 57 games in and a week away from deadline. We know where we're at. Team has nearly league worst goaltending, no elite producers, chemistry issues, can't fight from behind, is outside of playoffs and losing ground.
His guidance from his bosses is still to make the playoffs, and he has no contract. I'm actually surprised he hasn't already made a move - which IMO actually speaks really highly of him to me. Another GM is looking to save their job right now.

At his point I don't think he's going to go spend major assets But he's also not going to go in the media and say "we've given up"

If they win 5 in a row - maybe he thinks about a smaller move if the market isn't too expensive.

If they lose 4 of 5 I think it could push things the other way and they probably sell some assets.

And really the only thing holding this team back right now is the goaltending (and PP to a lesser extent) they've been able to overcome everything else you mention in your post (real or perceived).

It's a 9-10th place team a goalie away from playoffs and elite talent away from cup contention

Not hard to evaluate.

Exactly. They aren't being honest with themselves. This team just isn't very good. They've waited too long for them to "turn the corner". If it hasn't happened by now it likely never will

I still believe Tre is going to move on and get an executive role with another team this off season.

They could shed some fat. They're going to have to anyways. Ah well, I still think they should just bring in some cheap try outs to play for a role for next season.

It's all I really saw in those comments. Surely to hell he's got a better idea than he's letting on.

Could be a comment that is meant to motivate the team. I'm not making a push unless these guys force my hand. Probably not enough time left for them to do that but if they win the next 3 things could look a lot different than they do now.

Not sure why anyone takes what a GM says at face value anymore.

He does. Any trades that happen before the deadline were set in motion way before. That quote is generic speak. He can't tell us what's really happening nor what they have assessed this team as.

I really hope we at least try to trade Toffoli. Having a good year, could cash him in for a couple nice assets you would think.

"I haven't given much thought in to trading a first round pick..."

So he's going to trade the pick without even thinking of it.????

We finally got that #1 centre and blew any chance of re-signing him by getting Huby and Kadri, a couple of guys that give #### all about the Flames and are only here because we backed up a truck full of money to their houses to get them to stay/come.

We should have flipped Huby and if we really had to have him, offered Kadri more money for shorter duration.

The alternative is stating outright that we will be sellers, which this franchise would never do.

This is a positive. It means we're not going to go crazy and sell off all our futures and be buyers.

What the rebuild could have been...

To FLA: Tkachuk
To CGY: Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt, 2025 1st round pick

To Team: Huberdeau
To CGY: 2023 1st round pick, 2024 1st round pick (+?)

To Team: Weegar
To CGY: 2023 1st round pick, 2023 2nd round pick (+?)

2023: 3x 1st round picks, 2x 2nd round picks
2024: 2x 1st round picks
2025: 2x 1st round picks

Like...it was right there.

Then we could have sold Lindholm, Tanev, Hanifin and Toffoli between 2023-2024 to add even more.

It was right there.

Don't trade Monahan.

I'm sure (I hope) they have an internal date at which they concede the playoffs aren't happening and pivot.

Our next 3 games are Ari, Vegas, Colorado.
Minnesota plays CBJ, Toronto, CBJ.

By Monday night if they haven't closed the gap, it's throw in the towel for the season time, with a few days left of trading.

It is never throw in the towel time. Ever.

Not sure how Huberdeau gets that type of return.

Flames would have been foolish to chase the Florida deal if they wanted to rebuild. Conroy said on Barn Burner other teams were offering futures but they liked the Florida deal because it helped them win now. The rebuild route would have been the Necas+ package that was allegedly the runner up.

I opened a thread on this exact thing in beginning of November and the CP pitchforks came out in full force.

115 point Huberdeau? Two firsts - I think he gets that no problem.
