I believe with offer sheets, the NHL only calculates the first 5 years.

So if it is 7 years, $63 Mil, the offer sheet compensation is based on 5 years $63 Mil

Offer sheets are total value over 5 years. Which equates 12.6 per year meaning 4 first rounders. So they could save the $9 on him and take the 4 picks.

AAV – dividing the total compensation offered by the lesser of the length of the contract or by 5. Ie. a seven-year, $49 million deal has an AAV of $9.8 million ($49 divide by 5) but a salary cap hit of $7 million … A five-year, $35 million deal would have a $7 million AAV and cap hit … A big difference in draft pick compensation.

Almost is a big difference on 8+ million a year. It's an extra 300k between California and QC. Every year.

But he can't really threaten to find a better deal, he has to wait to that deal is offered. If he's happy with the contract that's offered, he's cemented the dollar value, which absolutely takes away any sort of power in the situation from the Oilers. They match, or don't, they lose all input on dollars.

McGuire: Teams will offer sheet Draisaitl if McDavid makes $13.25M
And they should, Oilers have offer sheeted players, have won a ridiculous number of lotteries, and now are in a vulnerable spot. Offer sheet away

You know who should offersheet Draisaitl? Nashville. Lots of cap space and not a lot to re-sign.

Good deal for the Oilers I hate to say, even at 13+. The 8 years is huge - if he was playing for the Flames, we'd be thrilled with that. And he left some money on the table.

A 5yr, $7.8Mil per year offer sheet is almost a no brainer, compensation comes in just under the 2 first rounder+ cost and the contract is pretty fair. So it will be hard for Edmonton to get him to sign for less than that.

Why do you think that?

Honestly just curious, as to me it seems to be an obvious move to try to take advantage of a handcuffed GM and to try to thieve a very good player away.

I think if you want to hose the Oilers on an offer sheet, try to get Draisaitl to sign a four-year deal as he would go right to UFA after that. 4x$9 would leave them in a pickle.

i'm a little surprised that McD gave up so many UFA years...

However, at the rumored 13.5 million per year, he didn't take a discount, that's for sure.

its a deal Oilers had to have though; virtually every team in the league would have looked into offer sheeting him if they could...

Draistl will be interesting to see what transpires there

I was thinking the Islanders. The icing on the cake would be that they have our 1st rounder which would make the offersheet less burdensome for them. It would be like the Hamonic trade helping to prompt an offersheet.

San Jose is so well positioned to make an offer sheet on Leon

Because big money offer sheets are the domain of the terminally stupid. And there aren't that many terminally stupid GMs out there who also have the picks available and the cap space available to pull it off.

Most importantly, winning in a cap system requires that players outperform their contracts. Almost by definition, to successfully land a player via RFA offer sheet, you have to give them a deal that they can't outperform. Otherwise, the original team signs without hesitation.

We're fantasizing about screwing the Oilers here, but any team that actually takes him would have to overpay and lose 2 or 4 first rounders in the process. That's not a winning play in a cap and asset management driven landscape.

I don't know if thrilled is the right word, satisfied but thrilled would be if he signed for 10

I don't think the Coilers can afford to sign Draisaitl. And if the rumors are true with McJesus, it will be very difficult to build a Stanley Cup Contender when you have one contract eating up that much space!

Coiler fans are screwed! You have this year for everything to go right again, I don't see that happening again.
