Players may hate escrow but without it they can't have the escalator so they may need to be realistic in that the salary cap isn't going to hit those magical numbers forecasted years back. What's worse for the NHL is that with Cable TV industry on the decline they face lower future income on their TV deals. We may be close to the golden age of salaries in the NHL.

Vegas only moves the needle forward if their revenues come in above league average. They certainly won't move it by a significant degree though.
Personally, I think the upcoming TV armageddon is known to the union and why they would really like to find a way to break the linked cap. Because as it stands, the NHL would weather that changing landscape better than the other big leagues precisely because the players aren't guaranteed 100% salary.
It possibly also plays into the thought process of MCDavid's agent. Sure, he'd lose a lot to escrow if that armageddon happens, but he'll still make a lot more than if he had to negotiate a new contract in that new reality.

Teams should absolutely be throwing offer sheets at Draisaitl. If there is one franchise that deserves to have the unwritten rules broken on them, it's Edmonton.

How soon can another team tender an offer sheet? Do they have to wait for the beginning of free agency on 1 July?

If anyone deserves an offer sheet its the Oilers
They had no business picking either of those players after 3 first overall picks

I get that Draisaitl is a wonderful prospect but he's definitely not worth close to $10M at this point. The team that signs him to that offer sheet will be much worse off!
|
I agree that he is not worth that - I don't think there is any question about it.
However, they are about to sign McJesus for $13.25M. Pretty hard to convert your second best player into draft picks immediately afterwards.
With commitments to players like Lucic, and long term contracts for guys like Klefbom, how do they let their second best player just leave?
They can't. They have to match.
And then good fooking luck building a winner around those two contracts!
The rest of the league will sit back and smile if someone submits an offer sheet.

Chiarelli has already told his fanbase he'll match any offer sheet. This could get very interesting...

I'd rather have Draisaitl at 9 mill than whatever they would get for 6 which is probably slim pickins.

Also, all the league-wide sponsorship contracts will now be split 31 ways instead of 30. Depending on how much money those bring in, even if Vegas is an above-average team on its own, the per-team HRR could still drop.

I dunno...it's close:
Package A: 2 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick, Kovalchuk at 3 years @ $6M, additional $3M in cap space for flexibility
Package B: Draisaitl locked into a long-term, above market value contract

It would actually make a ton of sense for Vegas to offer sheet Draisatl. They have so many picks at their disposal and cap room to burn once they finish making the trades they need to make.
Drop the guy a 7 year $63M offer and watch Oiler nation explode!
