That doesn't necessarily stop police, business, residents, etc., from harassing addicts. Not to mention that many communities in BC fall under RCMP jurisdiction and as such are not as beholden to requests from the province.

What do you define as harassing addicts? Asking them to not smoke fent in front of businesses? Not to leave needles in parks? And yes, the RCMP must follow their MOU with BC Crown so not sure where you got that belief from.

Those are important distinctions, and it's worth the time/effort to make them.

The hope is that it will reduce the addicts 'hiding' while getting high and into safer spaces where they can be saved if they overdose.

Will it work... I mean probably not to any real degree but baby steps is better than the status quo.

Of course it matters.
There are a lot of situations where how we get to a result is, at least to some degree, just as important as the result itself.

If we are supposed to be a country of laws, and we've decided that something should no longer be illegal, then we should strike the law making that thing illegal.

It's not like this is some massive government project that will take a lot of time and money. It's a vote in the legislature, to codify a policy that they are already following. Eliminating grey areas in laws/policing, and changing a policy, that can easily be changed/forgotten, into a law, that requires some effort to change, is intrinsically valuable, assuming you think it is good policy, which in this case I do.

No it’s a good idea, treat this as a health issue vs criminal matter. However, I do believe there should be some sort of rehab required. Not sure what it looks like but the current efforts to deter drug use/get people off it clearly aren’t working.

It never made sense to arrest and charge people with a gram or 2 of something they plan to do themselves. Good change.

Cocaine sometimes has fentanyl in it now these days, so probably trying to cover that off? MDMA is a bit of a head scratcher though.

There have definitely been instances of MDMA, cocaine, ketamine, etc., being laced with fentanyl out here. It's not as common as heroin, but it happens. There have also been growing instances of street drugs being cut with benzos, which is incredibly problematic as well.

If MDMA is relatively benign, that could also be a good reason to decriminalize it.

Asking them:
Don't do drugs in front of their business.
Don't break into their business to steal things to fund drug purchases
Don't leave needles infront of their business

You know, standard ways businesses harrass addicts
