Icon34 Predators re-sign Colton Sissons (7 yrs, AAV $2.86m)

what an odd, odd deal. Coming off a 15+15 season, had arbitration rights.

This is an interesting deal.

Sam Bennett can go right ahead and sign the same deal

Has there ever been a contract this long for an amount below $3 million/season? It's an interesting concept for sure.

I guess if someone offered you just short of 3 million dollars, guaranteed, for the next 7 years you wouldn't say no, especially with the turnover in the NHL nowadays. Young guys are taking seatrs from the mid range players every year, better to staple your ass to one seat for seven years than risk being replaced after a 2-3 year deal.

With the deals that we’ve seen this summer I’m now expecting to see a 2 year, $2-2.2M AAV for Bennett, or maybe even a quick 1 year, 2M deal.

...does anyone else think Tree should perhaps be locking up Mangiapane on a longer-term deal at a low dollar figure similar to this?

Closest is probably Jarnkrok...signed for 6 years at $2M AAV coming off a 16 goal, 30 point season.

This is pretty much the same contract 3 years later when you factor in the cap increases and with Sissons coming off a 15 goal, 30 points season.

Going back a few more years, the Preds also gave Josi a 7 year deal ($4m AAV) after two good but not spectacular seasons. Obviously they saw potential and it ended up being huge value for the team.

That Jarnkrok deal worked out great for Nashville. The going rate for a player like him is probably close to double that (for example, we're paying Frolik twice that)

Nashville does these these deals all the time, and either end up being either fine, or complete steals

Yeah, that's not a guy you give 7 years to.

Part of the reason long contracts have been value add for teams in the past is cap inflation though. If the cap continues to go up at the same rate that will continue to be true, but maybe it won't.

While true, imagine if we gave Lance Bouma a seven year deal after his one big season? That's basically what Nashville just did. They better hope that Sissons actually trends up.

Thanks to other posters, now we know the answer is yes... I think the more important question is:

Have any of these low dollar long term deals worked out in the player's favour?

If not, then there is very little incentive for players to sign them.

Bennett keeps getting squeezed ... you can see the middle class is going to pay for the boost to elite contracts.

Sundqvist 4x2.5
Sissons 7x2.85

and both had better ppg and somewhat similar age.

A two year deal is almost pushing closer to his expiring deal now, maybe 2x2.25, and if he wants dollars he's going to have to go deeper in term.

Well, no, this is wrong. Sissons has .291 ppg, Sundqvist has .278 ppg, Bennett has .371 ppg. And he's played way more games than either of them.

Hopefully this contract will help him get his silver dollar casino back.
