Treliving on the Fan talking about Mangiapane looking to earn a bigger role not just making the team by being one of the "23, 22, or 21".
Sounded like they're prepared to carry 1 or 2 less extra bodies if need be (Tkachuk). 2 league minimum contacts is an extra $1.4M of cap space.

In reality at this point the Flames can fit in Tkachuk at $8.5M cap hit just by moving Czarnik out.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk ($8.5M) - Backlund - Frolik
Lucic - Ryan - Bennett
Mangiapane - Janko - Reider or DSP ($700k)
Gio -Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson
Stone
That would leave the Flames with $800k of cap space by putting Valimaki on LTIR. And under that scenario Dube probably spends a lot of time commuting because they can fit him in as a call up with that cap space but would save $$$ for every day he's not on the roster - and he's waiver exempt.
If they could get Tkachuk at $8.25 that would be perfect. They would be able to keep Dube on the roster full time, have a 22 man roster, and still have $270k of cap space.

For sure, but that's a tough one for me.
Isn't say Frolik exactly the kind of guy you'd want to add to a team that wants to go on a playoff run?
Would be odd to move the guy to make room to add a guy like him in a few months.

I am still betting on 8.5 x 6 years.

9 aav isn't going to happen because the flames simply can't do it.
They could clear up enough for 8, but would have to make a more significant trade to be able to shell out a 9 mil cap hit. And if that cap clearing move hasnt been made until now I dont see it coming.

I wonder if Tkachuk wants it to be entirely signing bonus like Marner, but Brad doesn't want to set that precedent for the Flames (or maybe the owners simply won't allow it).
Pure speculation on my part.

Kylington is also waiver exempt, although his cap hit is a little lower than Dube's.
Would you do five years @ $8.25 m?

Is it five that takes him right to UFA or four? I would prefer to get at least a 6 year deal or a two year bridge personally.

I believe a 5 year term would make him a UFA at the end?
If that's the case, I would not offer a 5 year contract.

I think if it's an 8 handle, you have to get 6 years (at least). You only give the player a 5-year deal if it benefits you on the number (i.e. low to mid 7s)

Tkachuk can become a UFA in four years. A five-year deal buys one year of unrestricted free agency, and it would tie him with Lindholm, Hanifin, and Backlund as the longest term contracted players on the roster.
Six years would be ideal.

I think I would want the 6th year if they go over $8M per.
$50M over 6 years for an $8.33M average is my gut on where this will end up based on other contracts.

MT is not worth 8mm today - maybe 3-4 years from now. But i guess you are paying for the future.

$8.33M is just a shade more than what the Flames could manage without moving Frolik.
If they signed him for that, and shipped out Czarnik to a team in need of NHL bodies, and sent Quine down and otherwise kept the guys up that are currently listed on CapFriendly, that would leave them with a 21-man roster (which is not sustainable) of $81,505K.
It needs to be a 7 handle. Or they have to make a significant move, like trading Frolik.

Oops, that didn't factor Valimaki.
If they did what I said, and brought in a 22nd body that was less than Valimaki's $894k (i.e. no more than $889k), then they would just slide under with a 22 man roster.

Agree - the RFA market is a bit wonky but high 7'S to low 8's is what he will get on a 6 year deal.
Here are all the forwards signed for between $7.5M and $8.5M since July 1 2017.
Aho: $8.5M
Duchene: $8M
Wheeler: $8.25M
Couture: $8.0M
Draisaitl: $8.5M
Johansen: $8.0M
Kuznetsov: $7.8M

I feel like we are at the breaking point now, with both sides losing by waiting much longer. I'd be surprised if he isn't signed by Wednesday.
I'm thinking 6 years X $8.15M.

Maybe you should contact his agent and let him know how you feel. I am sure when they become aware of your feelings they will sign a deal.

True but can you handle a much bigger salary (and potentially much better player) by bringing him in at the deadline. Which is why trading Frolik with his full cap hit is undoubtedly difficult now at the start of the season.
They were ready to trade away Frolik at the deadline last year for an upgrade so hard to imagine things have changed much.
