To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the classic campy Batman TV series starring Adam West that premiered on January 12, 1966, today Lego has officially revealed a massive new 2,500-piece Batcave set that includes the retro Batmobile, Batcopter, and Batcycle
Opened items will still fetch retail price (average), as long as it is complete and have instructions.
Licensed and Limited Edition items tend to go for 2-3+ times unopened, or 1.5 -2+ times opened. Obviously, this all depends on item and how old/limited items is.
If you plan on getting big items (or spending $200+), it would be a good idea to join the LEGO Club and get your points to redeem.

I just wanted to mention that it drives me crazy that Lego allegedly has a hand in artificially raising prices on their sets. I've heard several explanations, it is too expensive to produce bricks for sets like the Millennium Falcon, R2D2, Super Star Destroyer etc, but I don't buy that given how popular those sets are. That would at least absolve lego of some of the guilt. I've heard that Lego is stuck and some of their most faithful will revolt if they burst the bubble by devaluing those sets by producing more. I've heard that keeping production runs limited actually helps sales of otherwise mediocre selling sets because the hoarders and investors, of which there are way, way too many, buy up everything for speculation and profit.
Lego truly is the Lord Business Lego. Secretly I hope that just like the early 90s comic book speculation business, that Lego's "investors" and speculators get screwed because they've literally spent 10s of thousands of dollars to screw the rest of us. Unlikely to happen since Lego has a monopoly but you never know, ebbs and flows of the toy market.
I get that Lego doesn't "owe" me anything, this is just a general complaint lamenting the fact that there are about half a dozen sets out there that I will likely never be able to build because it might upset the investor business. It's like the cab license fiasco in Calgary. Satisfy demand. Screw investors. I just wanna build.

If you have the time and inclination, you can use various websites to source the parts yourself, get the instructions and build it for a fraction of the market value price.
Thinking of getting back into Lego after 20 years. lol
Saw the Batman Tumbler and was like a little kid. But I'm not sure how it would display... So I'm gearing towards the F40 instead. Any thoughts on that one?

The Tumbler displays nicely...if you have the room. I don't have the set myself, but a friend of mine does, and he says that it's not the length that's an issue, but that it's quite wide for it's overall size, so it needs a good shelf/area to put it.
The F40 (again, I don't have it, but just saw the display model at the store today) is less than half the size of the Tumber, and much easier to display in narrower, smaller places.

Thanks! Did your friend comment on the build? I heard it's fun but a bit repetitive as its identical left and right sides.
I saw both built and in person. Completely agree. I have the shelf space for the tumbler, but my brain is telling to spend half the money for the F40 since I'm pretty much starting new again. Haha.

The Tumbler was a 'get back into Lego' build for my friend, too. He really enjoyed it. If you are going to build sets though, you are going to have to get used to sets that are mirrored a lot. The Helicarrier for instance...both front and back rotors are mirrored, and not all that different from each other, so you are building 4 rotors (Still loved it, was a hella fun build).
If you are going with one over the other, I'd suggest going with the Tumbler, as it's been out longer and is more likely to go out of production before the F40. Once you decide you want something out of production, the costs skyrocket as EBay takes no prisoners.
Unfortunately, you might be too late on the Tumbler. I believe it is essentially in the process of being retired, and everywhere I look, it's out of stock.
My son is an avid collector and has his entire dresser covered with just about everything from Star wars to Star Lord. He loves it.... builds it and displays it.
This summer, Lego will release its first-ever minifigure that uses a wheelchair, the company says, confirming reports that emerged after one of the toys was seen at a toy fair. In recent years, the company has been urged to show more diversity in its offerings.
