I’m happy for the player.
He is too young for the flames current coach anyways. Best to get him out for nothing.

I think “only one team wanted him” comes from the report that there was only the one team to even put in a claim.

Gilbert is better than both, IMO.

Valimaki was a mess though.
He handled the puck like a hand grenade and looked completely shattered in confidence.
Now maybe that's Sutter fault for how he talked to him, but guessing it's more a fear that his career was slipping away.
Side by side Mackey was the better bet coming out of camp, and with a lower salary it only made sense (that 600K difference accrued through a season would add $1.8M to the player they can acquire at the deadline).
Glad he settled in for Arizona though. Good kid and wish him nothing but the best.

Valimaki was given 5 and a game last night for two handing Max Jones in the back.

Just worth mentioning that the Flames made the wrong choice in keeping Mackey and waiving Valimaki.
Stupid decision.

Valimaki has been averaging 21:30 ATOI/game since Ghostisbehere was put on IR.
1a and +2 in those 3 games. Yotes are 2-0-1.
Hopefully he keeps this up.

For a team lacking depth at D, if we could have this version of Valimaki, we would be better off than Mackay. He was showing nothing when he was here, so 20/20 hindsight.
But it's definitely a something burger.

Wish we had more patience with prospects and gave them more opportunities.. Thankfully Pelletier is getting a good chance finally..

The team made the best decision at the time based on what they saw out of training camp.
Also, it's the Coyotes. If Boston signed him to an extension there could be an argument.

Valimaki had 82 games with the Flames and another 55 in the AHL.
If he wanted to show he could play well and be counted on as one of the six mainstay defencemen, he had ample opportunity to do so. He didn’t.
I think people are conveniently forgetting how bad he looked by the end. He was getting worse. He needed a change.

So that makes 2 of our last 6 first round draft picks needing to leave Calgary to find some level of success. Another one of them refused to sign here long term. 1 is getting his first taste in the NHL (that’s good), 1 is in the AHL and 1 hasn’t signed here yet.
2 of 6 had to leave.
1 of 6 chose to leave.
1 has played a handful of NHL games.
1 is in the AHL.
1 has yet to sign
This isn’t very good. There’s probably something not right with the organization if players “need a change” or choose to leave.
Something isn’t right.

You’re looking for a story where there isn’t one. The cause of almost all of these is easy to pinpoint and none of them have anything to do with each other. Not to mention that you’re trying to make 3/6 that aren’t even negative situations sound negative by association.
Kind of ridiculous, isn’t it?

50% of last 6 first round picks have “needed a change” or have bailed on the organization. I suppose that’s either glass half full or glass half empty.
I’m not painting the other 3 as negative, just listing them as where they are.

Tkachuk wanted to play in the US and forced a trade
Bennett requested a trade after another year of being messed with but found his game and was happy to stay once Sutter arrived - still got traded
Valimaki was not a good player and was lost on waivers because he couldn’t earn a spot, and he has earned one as an injury replacement on a tanking team
Does it suck? Sure. Do the situations have anything to do with each other? No. Do they collectively point to some sort of “spoil” going on within the organization? Also no, and not even taken out of context. In context they would look even less concerning.

lol this again? Brad flat out said only one team put in a claim...they also tried to trade him.
Also, not directed at you the reason they kept Mackey was the cap. Even the Yotes didn't think he was worth that as he is taking a massive pay cut next season...and he obviously didn't think he could do better himself.
Good that he is playing in the league but he isn't the one that got away

Maybe they are just as mediocre at developing players as they are at everything else

Really hope this guy turns into a top 4 dman. Always liked him and wish him the best of luck.
Nothing the Flames could do though, nobody for the fans to blame. Just another incremental talent loss for the organization.
